Just recently, A father was exposed to the UK Border Agency for marrying his own daughter in order to get her a settled status!

Lets get the record straight here!

There is no homeless Asian or Indian, why, because they are marrying one another to get settled status!
The percentage of illegal marriages amongst the African community is very very low compare to that of the Asian/indian and European Community.

Are we then saying Illegal marriages is good? No, but in many ways justified! Because these guys are Nigerians, a lot of emphasis is been laid here, we are the shadow of ourselves!

A guy resides in a Country for 30 hard years, working his socks off, paying his tax and thereby helping building the nation, shouldn't he be given an automatic entitlement to bring his family here? It should not have resulted to this demeaned, disgraceful, shameful and open rebuke from the public had the govt. done her own part.

I believe slavery was over decades ago, why should we still be living like a slave? You come to this country with a student visa, you have to live here legally for ten years b4 you're entitle to settlement status except perhaps you get married to a British citizen, or get a job that makes you qualify than your British counterpart.

If you here illegally(your visa expires, tourist visa), you have to wait 14 years b4 you're entitle for settlement. Now tell me, do those that fall in  these categories  have to wait for that long before seeing their families back home?

In this country, your status matters a lot! if you have a solid foundation the sky is the limit for you. And if you don't, and still don't want to find a solution to it, then I guess the[/b] 'early morning' job hasn't taught you a lesson.

Thousands of our beautiful ladies ends up in the 'care home' job, even some of our guys are also joining for lack of working papers! The 'Security' (Ode, gateman) job is shaking up quickly. A lot of our brothers  have been deported in this sector for working with fake documents.

Pls tell  me, what should we do to find a lasting solution to this problem?

I think about the issue u mention toward the end, i think our government should just make it a better place for us to live so that we will not be running to another country in other to survive. For example Japanese and other good countries only visit or study then back to their country, this is because their country is convenient and confortable for them.

Maybe, you should ask the British Government.

When Nigeria become a better place for its citizen to live in then they shall stop treating us like slave in-fact no comment cos everything is wrong about Nigeria

Get onething straight here, asian marrying each other is part of their culture, cousin marry cousin while in Nigeria, the case is not the same.

Nigerians don't marry their relative distance or close one.

So don't use that as an example.

first get something straight. moving to or visiting another country is a PRIVILEGE not a RIGHT. every country has every right to determin its immigration policies. look at the world. the countries with the strictest immigration/visa policies tend to be the best developed. you think that is a coincidence? if you are planning to move to another country it is YOUR responsibility to research that countries policies and determin if you can live with them. NO immigrant has any right to move to another country and demand said country make their policies more lenient so they can bring over their "relatives", nor can prospective or illegal immigrants demand another country change their policies to allow them to become legal immigrants.

Second. slavery is the act of forcing someone to labor for you without pay against their will. if you CHOOSE to go to another country, you CHOOSE to seek employment and are compensated for said employment that is your CHOICE NOT SLAVERY!

you want a solution to your problem? get rid of this pathetic mentality because its bigotry, and follow the laws of whatever country you plan on LEGALLY moving to or prepare to expect the consequences

I don't know where you reside, but I myself am not a slave in the UK, nor am I treated as one. People are treated as they treat others, or allow themselves to be.

Untill you stop playing the victim, you'll always be treated as a slave, wherever you are, and that includes Nigeria. Stop justifying illegal acts, and blaming the countries you intend to live in, and you'll find things are much clearer.

agathamari sums it up nicely, its YOUR CHOICE and you live with it whatever situation you find yourself. I put the blame on our mentality and the Nigerian leaders.

We have to change our mentality by thinking the white people are better and put them on this pedestal.Alot of Nigerians I have come across here in the UK (even the ones with accent) pretend they are not in touch with the Nigerian people/culture or way of life and try to distance themselves from anything Nigerian. They feel that by doing this, they will be accepted by the whites and appear superior to other Nigerians. It is this mentality that has infected most of us that everybody thinks, I have to go to UK, Europe, lapland, whatever at all cost to succeed.

This misconception leads people to obtain visitors visa, overstay, work as care workers, cleaners etc and complain of having to wait 14 years before they can become legal and go back home to see their family. Even have the guts to complain of slavery. YOU MADE THAT CHOICE THEN YOU LIVE BY THE RULES! simple!

Every country has the right to control immigration and influx of people coming in and out of their country. I know for certain, that we Nigerians will not allow the white people(or other nationals) to troop in and out of our country without some sort of control and regulation.

Our leaders need to do more to repair the country so that we can be proud of our country and not feel the need to go to other countries to settle. If this happens, trust me we can confidently stick two fingers to other countries and their strict (you reckon) immigration rules.

All the beautiful ladies and men you refer to that work as care workers etc have their reasons for doing it. Some because they love it and it is the career path they want to follow, some because they have no papers and that is the only option.

Whether we like it or not, if you choose to come here and remain here illegally, you have chosen to restrict your progress, employment wise(although some illegals have been lucky to still keep very good jobs, even buy a car and a house). You cannot complain. The Laws of the land are very clear-Nigeria too get law.

And if you are here legally, the world is your oyster-more opportunities open to you.Again it is YOUR CHOICE wthether you utilise them or not.

I say the best solution is for us to have a more positive attitude towards our country and work towards change. Once that is done, others will respect us.I mean, imagine that Nigeria that is rich in oil should be having fuel scarcity, talk about not taking care of your own.

the govt has done its own part by allowing legal immigrant bring in their family, this guy brought in his daughter who has a family of her own already

Even students studying for only two years are allowed to bring in their family!!

For foreigners, even Nigerians living outside Nigeria, it may be easy to apply logic to situations. But Nigeria is a crazy place.
The perennial tyranny and permanent hostage situation has bastardized people's thinking. Sometimes, it's like there is so much pressure, from family, etc, for people to do anything to get them out of poverty. A hungry and desperate population in a land where anything goes, it's almost like a time bomb waiting to go off.

One interesting story. i ran into a Nigerian dude at the Dubai International airport last week. He claimed to be en route to Bangkok, but had missed his flight, and needed $30 to be able to get a seat on another flight. Unfortunately, I didn't have small bills so I gave him $27. My colleague was not amused. As far as he was concerned, the guy was probably some kind of con artist. I was like, so what? If he had a cushy job like mine, he wouldn't need to hang around departure lounges and hustle people for money.

Sometimes, we just have to show compassion. Someone who had lived in the UK for 30 years, to mess up like that, it's simply unfortunate.
