Nyaope addicts now target women with Brazilian, Peruvian wigs
Citizen reporter
The perpetrators have apparently mastered the art of differentiating between a wig and a weave.

Women in Durban have apparently started thinking twice before spending thousands of rands on Brazilian and Peruvian wigs, as that is exactly what Nyaope addicts have started targeting to sell for drugs.

The weaves that cost from R3 000, depending on the length, have now become a quick-buck scheme for the addicts in the Durban CBD, who then sell them to hair salons or other people on the street for a cheaper price.

Nqo Khumalo, of Diamond Hair Salon, told Daily Sun she has had many addicts come to her salon to sell the wigs for as little as R250, which is a bargain for a wig that costs about R3 000.

Khumalo reportedly said her clients did buy the wigs even though they know they had been taken off another woman’s head. Though she was worried about the trend, she told the tabloid she could not stop it, as she was afraid of confronting the perpetrators.

The perpetrators have apparently mastered the art of differentiating between a wig and a weave.

Durban Central Police Station’s Captain Khephu Ndlovu confirmed to the tabloid that he had received several complaints from women who were robbed of their pricey wigs.

He further advised women to avoid areas around King Dinuzulu Park, Warwick Junction, Field Street and The Worshop Shopping Centre if they wanted to keep their wigs.

Whoonga addict stole my weave'

Durban - Drug addicts, in the hunt for their next fix are snatching the expensive wigs off the heads of unsuspecting women in city centres across the country.

Tell a friend

In the past few weeks, there has been a rise in the number of women taking to social media to complain about either falling victim to addicts snatching their wigs off their heads, or witnessing someone being robbed of their wig.

The victims believe the theft is the result of rampant whoonga abuse and the addicts it creates who would do anything for a hit.

So rampant has the practice become that some women tweeted their experience to new Police Minister, Fikile Mbalula.

The incident was widely mentioned in Johannesburg, with Bara Taxi Rank having a number of incidents. Now it seems to have made its way down to Durban.

The rampant wig theft was highlighted in Zulu newspaper, Isolezwe with many of their readers either finding it very funny sympathising with the victims.

Women spend thousands of Rands on these wigs and a few hundreds to have them installed.

More and more, hairdressers and customers talk about these incidents. Hairdressers have said that customers frequently walk in with cornrows and ask for help after addicts have snatched their weaves.

In Durban, this has happened mainly on Joe Slovo Street (Field Street) and the Market (along Warwick Avenue).

Reports suggest that addicts sell these wigs at a cheaper price, so they can get money in order to get high.

A Facebook post, which has since been removed, read:

ATTENTION LADIES!!!...

Addicts have reached a new level. What I saw today at the market is scary. Addicts don’t stop at taking your wig. A lady was held at knife point by an addict, while the other undid her wig, so be careful ladies. (translation)

These incidents have become very common that a Tweep recently alerted the Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula:

Please minister apparently our snatched wigs are being used by nyaope boys to get high. Wig safety is a part of community safety!! https:///KeazzblciN

Nyaope - The Merciless Drug

We all have a general idea of how awful drugs are for the body and mind, right chomas? You've probably also heard of the drug, Nyaope, that has been sweeping through areas across South Africa.

Nyaope or, Whoonga as it's sometimes called, contains third-grade heroin and a combination of chemicals that often include rat poison! Its main ingredient is antiretrovirals (ARVs) or HIV/AIDS treatment medication. It looks like a fine powder and is mixed with tobacco or marijuana and is smoked. Not surprisingly, it is considered to be one of the most dangerous drugs in the world!

The effects of using nyaope are serious and dangerous. Even after using it just once, you could experience some awful side effect such as anxiety, aggression, stomach cramps, a slowed down heart rate and respiratory problems. Some users have reported that they can go without eating for days, which weakens their immune system and makes them more vulnerable to illnesses. What’s also really sad chomas is that this killer-drug has made convicts of thousands in communities across the country.

Nyaope is very easy to get and the fact that it only costs about R20 for 'a hit' is one of the reasons that it has become so popular in South Africa. In fact last year several Durban Nyaope addicts made an unusual request to Durban city bosses – begging them to take stricter action against dealers who sell this heroin-based drug. Imagine that choma – so devastating are its effect that even some addicts want the supply to be cut!

If you know somebody who is battling a nyaope addiction, you can offer them support by helping them get help; by being there for them and listening to them and also referring them to services that can provide their support and care they need.

Prevention is better than cure chomas. Bottom line is, drugs are not cool and you should stay away from them at any costs as the consequences are life threatening to yourself and the people you care about. Love and respect your body and yourself!

Below are the details of a few drug rehabilitation centres and other place to seek help. Remember you can also Ask Choma any question you may have on nyaope and drug addiction.

Signs and symptoms of the use of Dagga and Nyaope

Some drugs cause a condition called drug-induced Psychosis, which usually passes after a few days.

San-Marié Cronjé | December 21, 2015

Nyaope is a street drug that can go by different names depending on the areas it is sold in, such as being called “Nyaope” in Pretoria, “Sugars” in Durban (KZN), “Ungah” in the Western Cape and “Pinch” in Mpumalanga.

According to the South African Federation for mental health these are the signs and symptoms to look out for.

Cheap and highly addictive, it typically contains a mixture of substances such as marijuana, low-grade heroin, cocaine, and other additives like rat poison and antiretrovirals, which are used to treat HIV.

Because nyaope is highly addictive it has a poor rate of recovery, and some users report feeling heavy cravings even on the first day of use.

It is also dangerous, because it reduces both heart and lung function.

In overdose, heart and lung function reduction can become fatal.

Withdrawal symptoms reportedly involve both craving and pain, which are temporarily relieved by fresh doses of the drug.

The effects of nyaope include:

Severe body aches, shivering, anxiety, insomnia, glazed eyes, hot and cold flushes
The low-grade heroin used means one can get toxic side effects such as skin diseases, frequent infections and lowered immunity.
Because nyaope is smoked with dagga, the user becomes addicted to dagga as well.
Dagga can have side effects such as hallucinations, paranoia, flashbacks, changes in eating habits, weight loss, and restlessness
Nyaope users usually begin to neglect their school work, or their jobs, and may eventually quit work or school altogether.
Users need for extra money to pay for the drugs also increases, and this often leads to criminal behaviour when they no longer have legal access to money.
Because nyaope is so addictive, addicts may become violent when they are unable to access the drug, and may commit violent crimes even against family members or friends in order to get money.
When you have a substance abuse problem and a mental health issue such as depression, bipolar disorder, or anxiety at the same time, it is called a dual diagnosis.

In a dual diagnosis, both the mental health disorder and the drug or alcohol addiction have their own symptoms that may affect a person’s ability to function, handle life’s difficulties, and relate to others.

These co-occurring disorders also affect each other and interact. Many people who are addicted to drugs are also diagnosed with other mental disorders, including anxiety and depression.

Some people develop mental health problems because of their drug use, and some people take drugs in an attempt to alleviate symptoms of mental health disorders.

Drugs such as dagga, ecstasy and heroin have the ability to affect your mood.

They can cause certain emotions or dampen down others. This may be why you use them.

The changes in your mood or behaviour caused by drugs are the result of changes to your brain.

This is also the part of you that controls your mental health.

Some drugs cause a condition called drug-induced Psychosis, which usually passes after a few days.

However, if someone has a predisposition to a psychotic illness such as Schizophrenia, drugs may trigger the first episode in what can be a lifelong mental illness.

Using drugs can also make the symptoms of mental illnesses worse and make treatment less effective.

It is important to educate young people early on about the dangers of nyaope use and the effects that it will have on their physical, emotional and mental health, as well as on their relationships with others and their outlook for the future.

The best way to prevent addiction to nyaope or any other addictive substance is to not use them even once.

Signs and symptoms of drug abuse or addiction:

Behavioural changes, such as:

Drop in attendance and performance at work or school.
Frequently getting into trouble (fights, accide

Drug addicts who have allegedly resorted to a bizzare method of getting high are suspected of stealing ashes of the dead from a cemetery so that they can smoke them.

An employee at Mooifontein Cemetery in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, who asked not to be named for fear of losing his job, said more than 50 memorials were vandalised by nyaope users to steal the ashes.

He said the theft has been going on for some time and it was difficult to keep out the thugs who gain access to the graveyard through holes in the fence where people went in and out as they pleased.

"Nyaope addicts vandalise these things because they smoke the ashes. We man the gate but do not carry out patrols in the cemetery," the man said.

"Sometimes someone walks in but you do not see what they are up to."

When the Sowetan visited the cemetery last week, empty wooden boxes that used to store ashes and broken glass vases were all that was left of some compartments, with memorial stones bearing the names of the deceased missing. Some were still intact, though.

People went in and out of the cemetery freely without being stopped by the guards. Our car was neither searched at the gate nor were we asked to fill in a register.

Sowetan interviewed known nyaope addicts at the Leralla train station in Tembisa who said they had heard of people who laced the drug with ashes stolen from cemeteries .

One of the addicts said people who smoked the powder were not in their circles. "They smoke it in the other areas but we have not seen anyone smoke it here," he said.

Another one said she had heard rumours about the powder but she only laced her drug with dagga.

"We only hear about the powder from other people."

However, a third addict said he had never heard of such a concoction and that it sounded scary.

Police spokesman Captain Lesibana Molokomme said they had not received reports of cases of vandalised memorials from the cemetery. "According to our records, we do not have such cases," he said.
