For net international debt by country (external debt owing to
other countries minus external debt of other countries held),
see Net international investment position.
For public debts by country, see List of countries by public
debt.
This is a list of countries by external debt, which is the
total public and private debt owed to nonresidents repayable
in internationally accepted currencies, goods or services,
where the public debt is the money or credit owed by any
level of government, from central to local, and the private
debt the money or credit owed by private households or
private corporations based in the country under
consideration.
For informational purposes, several non-sovereign entities
are also included in this list.
Note that while a country may have a relatively large
external debt (either in absolute or per capita terms) it could
actually be a "net international creditor" if its external debt is
less than the total of the external debt of other countries held
by it.

i have always argued that a nation's debt as well as its external reserves are just adjustable variables in the larger picture of financial governance & administration.

it is not how much a nation owes that is the problem, it is what it does with what it borrows - how developed & widespread is the infrastructure; how attractive the economy is; how transparent its developmental & government institutions are; how solid & clear is the political direction & how stable is its sociopolitical environment...

Debt is good if it is used for development. And it's factor in a country or business shows the riskiness and ability to transform it into leverage. Most of the developed nations call "Debts" "Leverage" which they used for developing their counties while they attract unintuitive Africans to bring their meagre savings to develop their nation. America for example uses an alternative system of borrowing which makes their debt servicing far more cheaper with less negative impact on their economy. The most important thing is that so long a country keeps stacking up capital projects with the debt, and minimizing it's recurrent expenses unlike the former president and his Harvard graduate minister who were so lame and crass enough to be borrowing to pay salaries (such insanity) a country debt profile and repayment outlook is extremely positive. And the moral of the story is, some people here condemn Lagos for its higher debt profile, yet the state remains the most economical vibrant in the entire country with its IGR exceeding the entire SS and SE all combined, it tells you economics isn't that about numbers, but how well the numbers are been managers and interpreted.

Obasanjo and Ngozi okonjo Iweala has everything to do with our low debt profile.

Of course the present APC government borrowing like mad for phantom projects have already raised the debt several times from a near zero debt profile Nigeria had. Our saving grace has been the Nigerian senate that prevent the present thieves in power from simply robbing the country through acquiring debts secretly and pocketing most of it quietly without anyone knowing what they have been borrowing.
