Tetanus
Tetanus is an infection that is characterized by muscle spasms. It is the prolonged contraction of a muscle resulting from rapidly repeated motor impulses and it is usually introduced into the body through a wound. The bacteria generally enters through a break in the skin such as a cut, or puncture wound by a contaminated object. The bacteria is commonly found in dust, soil, saliva and manure. In 2015, there were about 209,000 infections and 59,000 deaths.
Symptoms
Onset of symptoms is usually 3 to 21 days after infection but it takes months to recover. They include fever, sweating, headache, high blood pressure ,General body pains and a fast heart rate.
Prevention
1. Proper immunization with tetanus vaccines
2. Wounds should be clean immediately and dead tissue removed
3. CDC recommends adult received a booster vaccine every ten years
Treatment
Mild cases can be solved through antitoxin which is given as intravenous therapy or by intermuscular injection
Note
Recovery from naturally acquired tetanus does not usually results in immunity to tetanus.
