Hello !!! it is not uncommon that people have viable business ideas, but due to the current situation in Nigeria, there may be lack of adequate capital to finance their businesses. Few people have had the opportunity to meet with potential sponsors of their businesses, but the first questions they are asked is where is your business plan. Since they do not have any, they are most likely to miss such opportunities. Writing a profitable business plan is not difficult, however most people see it as not a component of their discipline. Most courses require one to produce a business plan before graduation while others do not. This write-up is inspired to enlighten people on how to follow specific steps that will eventually make them come up with their own business plans or even developing for other people.
There is no hard and fast rule of writing a business plan, however all should include certain requirements.

Brief Description of the Business
The business royal fish farm is a business which specializes in the breeding of cat-fish known as “Clarias gariepinus” because of it uniqueness, adaptability and it advantages over other species of cat fish. It has high growth potential with a maturity period of five (5) months which possesses a lot of weight during sales. It can be located in any state in Federation with the vision of ensuring the availability of fish as well as reducing the price of fish in Nigeria all year round. Its short run objective is to commence with the rearing of fish but intends to integrate backward into brooding of fry and fingerlings (long-run objective).

Brief Overview of the Industry
Fish constitutes about 41% of the total animal protein intake by the average Nigerian hence there is a great demand for fish in the country however, fish represents 16 percent of all animal protein consumed globally, and this proportion of the world’s food basket is likely to increase as consumers with rising income seek higher value seafood and as aquaculture steps up to meet increasing demand (World Bank Report, 2013). Nigeria’s citizens as at the end of 2016 have a projected fish demand of 2.7 million tonnes of fish annually. Fish supply within the same period was 0.8 million tones, This figure was made up importation as well as from both artisanal and aquaculture, however aquaculture accounts for a smaller percentage of fish production. The current aquaculture production, is a far cry from its potential production annually. Data from Customs indicate that Nigeria spends between $400 and $600 million on importation of fish and fish products each year, creating an opportunity for further gains by domestic market participants (FMARD, 2016).

How social factors may affect the business such as: demographics, size of household, social attitude,
How laws and regulation may affect the business such as import laws, export control or promotion laws, special licenses etc

PLEASE NOTE: this section range from four to five pages.

Example:
Inflation and recession
Inflation and Recession- it is not strange that Nigeria is currently undergoing recession. One of the major cause of the recession in Nigeria is over-dependence on foreign goods leading to continuous balance of payment deficit which further leads to excessive demand for the Dollar and results to steady depreciation of the Naira. The government is continuously making and implementing policies that will favour local production and consumption such as high tariffs on imported items like cars, rice and low tariffs on raw material items such as farm machines, fertilizers, fish feeds, to encourage local production. It is important to note that unlike the drastic negative effects of inflation on corporations, inflation and recession will favour the fish farming business as only the cost of feeds and fingerlings are likely to increase significantly but due to shortage of supply of fish, the price is likely to increase beyond the increase in price of the inputs leading to abnormal profit.

Interest Rate- as at 2015, the average interest rate in Nigeria stood at 12.5% (Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin, 2015) which is quite high and signifies inflation, however since the interest rate is high, prices of goods are likely to increase including the fish farm produce (fish).

Total Cost (465,000 + 1,515,000) 1,980,000

Revenue after the first five months
Assuming the mortality rate is 15% the revenue for the first five months on the stocking of 5,000 fish would be 4,250 x 600 if the fish is sold at N600 but the current price is N650
Estimated revenue 4,250 x 600 = N 2,550,000

Analysis and Explanation

From the analysis done in this section of the financial segment, it was observed that a total of N1,980,000 is required to start up the fish business when stocking 5,000 fish. The total fixed cost stood at N465,000 while the total variable cost was N1,515,000. It can also be ascertained that having invested N1,980,000 in the business, the revenue after the first five months would be N2,550,000. It is also observed that after the first five months of investing 1,980,000 subsequent investment would be just the total variable cost which is N1,515,000 which will generate a revenue of N2,550,000. This means that having invested N1,980,000 at the initial stage, subsequent investments would be N1,515,000 which will generate a revenue of N2,550,000 that is a return on investment of 68.32% after the first five months. It is also interesting to note that when stocking 5,000 fish, the revenue obtained during the first five months covers the total cost which includes total fixed cost and total variable cost including a 28.79% return on investment.
Re: How To Write A Business Plan Or Feasibiility Study Report (fish Farm) by Kaygee1: 7:58pm On Jun 28, 2017
The break-even analysis
in the stocking of 5,000 fish is presented
using the formular

TFC/S-VC
where TFC = total fixed cost
S = selling price per unit
V = variable cost per unit

Fixed cost 465,000
Variable cost per unit
= total variable cost /total quantities to be sold

1,515,000/4,259 = 356.47

Therefore, breakeven point = 465,000/600-356.47

465,000/243.53=1,909.42
This means that a total of 1,909 units of fish are required
to be sold in order to break-even.

Please note that a business plan ranges from 20 to 30 pages. But a feasibility study report ranges from roughly 10 to 15 pages. A feasibility study report contains mostly the practical segment and analysis, while a business plan includes vision and mission statement, strategies of the business, market analysis, competitor analysis amongst others.

Fish Farming Business Plan in Nigeria / Feasibility Study

Some time ago, I was invited to do a thirty minutes presentation on fish farming in Nigeria. I was invited a club who were mainly women. So they wanted to teach their people entrepreneur stuffs. When I go there, I had to ask them to ask me questions first about the Fish farming business so that I will know the area to work on since they all said they knew the business. 80 percent of the participants asked me a similar question and what was it? They wanted to know why fish farming business is very lucrative Nigeria and why it has become an increasingly lucrative business. The simple truth is that the high preference and demand of fish over meat has been one of the most prominent reasons why the fish farming has become one of the most lucrative businesses you can trust your capital on.

You can also read Poultry Farming Business Plan In Nigeria PDF 2020

This scene is also applicable all over the world not just in Nigeria alone. In one of my previous article on catfish, I told us that catfish is one of the most consumed fish in Nigeria because of its many advantages over the other kinds of fish. What are these advantages? They are as follows; it tastes good, rich in protein, easy to breed, and is highly resistant. So many people are very scared about this business because they feel that the fishes are very difficult to rear but that is not the case because fish can actually survive in any temperature and climatic conditions. What about their feeds? Let me shock you. How do the fishes in the river survive? How do they feed and how do they survive some of the worst weather? Well, it may interest you to know that fishes can feed on vegetables which make it a profit maximizing business to venture into.

Are you worried about how or where to sell your fishes when they are due for sales? Hmm. In this business, you don’t have to worry at all about that because there is an already made market for your business at the right price at all times. Now, let me give you a hint on where you can actually sell your fish. They can be sold to restaurants, market sellers and grocery stores. Recently, we had a research result by some private firm and it showed that most of the retailers who buy their fishes does so from fish farms that are very far away from their shops. What does this mean? It means that there is a higher transportation cost on these sale and yet these guys still go the extra mile to buy these fish. This means a lot then. Do you know that this will surely affect the price of fish as they are sold. But yet these retailers are still in the business making gains daily. If that is the case with them, what about you who is the supplier? But that is not your issue because at all. You are the supplier and those who are retail buyers know how to balance their cheque book. What am I trying to say here in essence is that, the fact that these retailers go the distance to buy fish shows how lucrative this business really is?

So the secret to this business will be to set a fish farm in a strategic position which will automatically bring the fish farm closer to the retailers and guess what? This will be the killer my friend because you are playing the cards the retailer wants and they will pay whatever amount to buy from you because it will be stress free for them to transport it to their market place. Such an idea will be a very welcomed idea by your loyal customers and thereby increasing patronage. Fish farming business is a very popular business among the various ethnic groups in Nigeria and it is one of the highly sought farm animal products by restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, fish sellers etc.

Fish Farming Business Plan in Nigeria / Feasibility Study. 2

What is Your Reason for starting a Fish Farm?

There are some questions that are very pertinent to ask yourself before embarking on this kind of business. One of such is the question of “why am I into this business? This is a very vital question to ask yourself and answering this question will give you an edge in this business. You must have a well defined goal in mind. And that goal must be specific. Because as you journey in this business, one thing will keep you going and that is your goal. Stating your motive for starting this business must be clear and also very detailed. One thing I know is that “inspiration helps you start, motivation keeps you on the tract and goal gives you the strength to finish. Why do you have to state your motive because your motive will determine the business plan that will reflect on the business plan and business strategy. There is also the aspect of you deciding whether you want to go into commercial fish farming or you want to go into a subsistence farming just to feed your family with the fish farm.

Cost of Feeding

When talking about the cost of feeding in fish farming, this actually because the fish feeds varies and this depends on the quality of feed you a farmer intends to have for his fish farm. If you want an enhanced fish feeds then you should also be mindful that this cost than the others but you will see the difference with the growth of the fish. In fish farming feeds, we have different types of feeds. We have the local and the foreign feeds. One thing should be stated clearly here. These feeds won’t cost same price because they don’t produce same results. With the foreign feeds, you will grow your fish faster, bigger, healthier etc than what the local feed will do for you.

You won’t just jump into this business without putting into consideration what it will take to set up a successful fish farm. This is very important. Ensure you determine what it will take to achieve success in the business. All the factors that you need to start a fish farm must be available. And what are these determinants? They include the human and material resources and these factors should considered. And also the fish pond, the types of workers needed, do you need trained staffs or staffs that are not really trained who will learn on the job? Etc, , sources of water, feed etc These are some of the things that you will need to consider before starting a fish farming business in Nigeria.

Set Up Your Farm

There are factors to consider before setting up a fish pond in Nigeria and I will list but a few for your consumption.

Pond Construction

According tom our experts, it will be more economical to adopt the pond culture. This is the most commercially employed methods operated in Nigeria. It is cheaper when compared to tanks fish construction.

Cost of Labor

This particular issue must be followed up metinously because the cost for labour is not a static one. It carries and what you could know yesterday might not be what it is today. Which means the price for the construction of a fish pond will change as time progresses. So if I give a figure now, it is likely that you will meet or see another figure tomorrow.

One of the very advantages is that it makes room for natural biological productivity to occur in the fish farming system. There are new innovation which this will bring such as the use of cages or net enclosures to allow more effective collection and growing of fry.

Note that one of the most important factors to consider is that, the fish farm has the capacity to produce the greatest yield in the smallest area available at the minimum cost.

Living Conditions

Now you have to pay attention to what I will be telling you. According to our experts, ensure the temperature of the fish pond should not be below 28 degrees Celsius or 82 degrees Fahrenheit. The reason is that fishes need a water temperature of 28-30 degrees Celsius to survive and anything outside this will put their lives in danger. The PH level should be very much checkmated. The PH level should be so suitable with sufficient oxygen which will help to enhance the survival of living organisms. Pollutants such as sulphur should be taken away from your fish pond.

Water Supply

Before you start a fish farming business in Nigeria one of the most needed item on your list is water supply. Fish survives on water. Remember? So there will be need for a constant and regular water supply you will need access to regular clean water supply. Please take note of flooding else you will have a problem at hand.

Breeding

If you don’t how this is done, then place an order for your fish farming business and you will get all the details.
