Onomatopoeia is a figure of speech. It is the formation of words imitating the sound of the thing concerned. Eg The BANG of a door, the CLANG of pots, the HISS of a snake, The MEOW of a cat, BUZZ of a Bee. |

Some of the words are not big words, merely long. I hate big words because they're supposed to be for very specific use but prolixity drives people to use them when they really aren't necessary. A word that always manages to surprise me when I use it, as if for the first time, is characteristically. |
