I first heard of programming when I was in secondary school. It's always interests me and I couldn't wait to know but all I had then was a Nokia X2. I visited cplusplus.com few times but I didn't understand a dime. I had to stop then. I then go to w3shools.com where I learn basic html and css. I created a very crude wakpka site then. I stopped the day I posted the link here on Nairaland and one guy rubbish it when we were asked to comments websites we've created. Fortunately for me I was met a tutor during my first year at the University who taught me basic Java. I learned really fast then compared to my colleagues. I thought I know Java already, before you know it I started learning android then. Later I attended a web design class then which lays my interest in web design and development.
I try learning MEAN stack but stopped when I couldn't find solution to a bug I encountered during the course of learning. When Google announced firebase last year. I was so excited about and learnt and use it for 2 projects in android and Web. I Heard of django but couldn't wait to learn it as well. I downloaded the documentation and was following it and later stopped for no justifiable reason. My hard disk crashed this year and I lost all my projects though I've learnt of github and bitbucket but didn't take it serious.
My boss informed me of a company that needs Java Programmer to help them develop a remote server in Java. I then started learning about JAVA EE until today on which I was interviewed. All of the questions I was asked were things I've used and came across in Java SE but I failed woefully cos I didn't focus. I was told they would get back to me. That's why I came here to narrate my story for others to learn from.

To really become a programmer

1.Persistence
you obviously have to be someone willing to pay the price master whatever you choose wether that's a new framework, libraray, programming language its a life time of learning most especially on your own you might not even see much result early when you factor the fact that
light is poor & expensive
internet is poor & expensive

2.Internet Is Your Friend
get obssessed with the internet, get good @ using it o solve your own problem remember you have an advantage those that came before you didnt have all host available to them google, quora, stackoverflow, torrents,YouTube

3.Use Videos Not Books
video is a better and faster to retain and understand what you are learning use YouTube, torrents... the best videos are paid videos avoid lynda tutorials tho

4.Night Browsing
Seeing as browsing is expensive, getting the best night plan in your area for the cheapest prices is how you will get tutorial videos
5.Don't go alone
join whatsapp groups, go for meetups, volunteer to teach others, share what you know with your friends

Who is that person discouraging the use of books there

Well, maybe individual differences...but if a video was to give me what a good book will give, the size would be just too large.

There is always a difference (huge intellectual difference) between the video guys and the book guys.

Nice one people.
I just started Java nd recently learnt Hello World and some statements. My question is at what point would I be able to programme something reasonable. What more do I need to learn.
Please if there's a whatsapp group kindly let me know of it. Thanks

I use videos and books.

Books are also very good, its important to understand the theoretical applications of whatever your learning.

Videos makes it faster but books will force your imaginative sense and also build your logical skills.

Sorry to hear this brother, i don't consider what happened to you as a failure, you prepared for the job and studied towards the interview i assume, you really need to take programming as an hobby and every other things will sure come naturally.

However, you should see this as a challenge and never give up, go back to your drawing table and start learning, embark on more projects and take note of the methods. Master one language , i believe your subsequent interview will be interactive.

If you truly wants to learn and understand programming, use books especially "HeadFirst" programming book.. This is one of the best books i have ever seen.

I feel your pain OP. In my own case I learnt java with "Java How To Program - 7 Edition" by Harvey & Paul Dietel. I also make use of Torrent to get Video Tutorial that would otherwise cost good money in sites like Lynda.com, Udemy and TutPlus.
Just keep learning and using sites like stackoverflow, tutorialspoint, w3school, and dzone to learn. You will master the language to a good extent.
Remember that even in school the difference between a Third Class and a First Class is average of 25 marks. With what you narrated you are higher than the equivalent of a thirdclass in java programming. I am a self-taught programmer too and I understand you plight.

A programmer would go far if you can Focus on one language/task/project at a time. Sadly a lot of us had to learn this the hard way.

Op, don't be too hard on yourself, Java interviews no be beans or moin-moin.

Be encouraged.

Look at least 6 months of dedicated learning, when you start, go on learning until you feel tired, then stop and do something else, like sweeping the floor or just taking a strol, chat with friends, I suggest you start with HTML, it is not a programming language but they have more in common than different,, even two weeks is much for you to create a simple website, then switch over to CSS, then a month will be enough to create a simple nice responsive webpage or website, then switch over to JavaScript, which is a programming language, (don't try to memorize everything this time, it will stay in you when you begin to do projects) 3 months later you search for JavaScript projects for beginners on youtube, after completing that project save it as your portfolio, look for another project, do the same thing, by the time you complete 3 differnt projects you will really be good.
Also if you have android tablet of smartphone download sololearn JavaScript, html, Css they are all different apps from sololearn. So that even on a journey you can learn to code, anywhere any time, Download Quoda on your phone for the IDE needs, then you MUST have with you a pen and a paper or a jotter, so that you FIRST of all write down the code snipet before typing it inti the phone, tablet or computer.
You will naturally know when to make your own apps when the time comes. Plan Practice and Persistence Pays Plentifully. After doing all these then swith to Java, swift, python or any other programming language of your choice.
Google is about (if the havn't already) to replace java with Kotlin
programming language just as Apple replaces Objective C with Swift. (just to let you know).

You should also learn Photoshop or gimp for UI and UX designs

I meant java and not javascript. Java is a more robust and verbose OOP Language and I expect anyone who can study Java and grasp its concept up to 50% adapt to javascript far easily. Don't forget there are excellent javascript libraries like JQuery and GSAP out there that simplifies javascript tasks greatly.
