First check name/brand and nameplate specs - what are the VmP,Rated Current then VoC and ShortCircuit current e.t.c Get your digital multimeter capable of DC Voltage and Current Measurements handy then take panels out at midday under clear sun conditions and measure the open circuit voltage (be sure not to touch the metal contacts and get a nasty shock). Connect a suitable DC load that can draw say 70% of the rated current and measure the panel VmP & current using your multimeter. What you are trying to do here is to see if the Panels are able to deliver close to their rated voltage and current capacity. Are the panels new or used? In general you want to buy only well known & reliable performance brands within your budget - your panel investment is for the long term and you want to make your buying decision with this fact in mind. If you own a DC bench test module then the above tests will be easier to perform - or you can just go for the known Tier1 or Tier2 brand names who have established a history of good performance and be safe in the knowledge they will deliver to specs. In general you perform equalization of flooded batteries every 30 days or so and this is best done after the batteries are already fully charged. Most decent Charge Controllers have an equalize setting for FLA batteries and you simply program your desired equalize voltage typically between 15.0 to 15.4 volts per 12v battery. Most controllers also allow you to set automatic equalization every 28 to 32 days or manual equalization if you so desire. For topping off fluid, the key is to make sure that the lead inside the batteries are completely submerged in the electroyte mixture. There will be service/refill caps you can easily unscrew and peek inside with a flash light while some have a glass tube that helps indicate the fluid level at a glance from outside. You simply top off any cells where the fluid level has run low with DISTILLED WATER (NOT ACID OR ELECTROLYTE please) being careful not to overfill - like I said you want to make sure all the lead in the batteries are completely submerged in fluid - water rising like 1 inch above the lead should be fine. If you have deep pockets you may also invest in a suitable automatic battery watering kit to keep your battery fluid topped off. Some caveats - wear rubber gloves and eye protection, wear clothing you can afford to get ruined by acid, never top off the batteries while charging as electrolyte may bubble/splash out, wait till the batteries are done charging amd have cooled for 2 or 3 hours before you inspect fluid levels and top off fluid, and finally NEVER EVER BRING YOUR EYES CLOSE TO THE BATTERY TO GET A GOOD VIEW OF THE FLUID LEVEL INSIDE THE BATTERY CELLS - the gas coming off the battery cells will give your eyes a nasty searing. Believe me when I tell you this For your choice of charge controller I really can't say much as I only have hands on experience with MorningStar, Fangpusun and EP Solar charge controllers - other folks in the house will provide perspective. pitodenz: 5 Likes |

It all depends - adding more panels will ensure the controller can more easily deliver its maximum current rating under different operating conditions. Flooded batteries like to be charged between 10 to 13% of their rated capacity and this is where issues may arise if the net charge going into the batteries far exceeds this limit. I have a MorningStar MPPT and the custom programming option allows me to limit the controller output amps to any value of my choice - I don't know if the Midnite and Outback CCs have this feature as well. If you can regulate the charging amps to stay within the range your flooded batteries can safely accomodate, then adding more panels will not pose any danger but rather ensure you can easily reach either the charge controller maximum or your own set amps limit regardless of weather/ambient conditions. Do you know you can use your iPhone to perfectly position your solar panels. If you don't have a Clinometer or protractor handy . . but have access to an iPhone Open the compass on the phone, and swipe right to the "CLINOMETER" Place the iphone on the panels ( you can tape it down so it won't slide when you tilt the panels). That's all . . Just tilt the panels to the required angle. As you tilt them, you would notice the iPhone shows you the degree of tilt and Yes, it is very accurate. *Thank me later* 3 Likes |
