Hello Gurus here,

I'm new here.

I intend to make a transmission to solar power, but i will like to start gradually with a Battery and an inverter to power basic household electronics (TV, decoder, fan, 3 bulb, dual tub washing machine).

Please advice on how to go about this.

Thanks.

Joy solar panels.
They come with short cables (less than 900mm or 3ft) which makes it difficult to connect is series vertically.

Out of 12 panels I bought I had to open 2 of the panel control at the back to solder one of the terminals.

Buy at ur own discretion

pranil:

Can charge max at 15 Amps so best suited for 2 pieces of 200 AH ( 5 KWh) as it will take reasonable 6 hours or more to fully charge a discharged battery but if your neap is fairly stable you can go for a bigger battery

Specially as in case of office it will get fully charged over weekends

Thanks for the response. However, I checked out the Luminous which is similar to this inverter on Amazon India and reviews were really poor.

The complaints were much and ratings were low. I think I might just go for the Must Power inverter.

Appreciate your review and info though.
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by olaade21: 10:33am On Dec 29, 2018
NiyiOmoIyunade:
On top of what Oga Pranil has said, given that your chosen inverter can deploy a proper charge algorithm to your batteries and you want to optimize charge speed, you can integrate a telecomms DC power supply (used sells for max 25k) in parallel with your inverter (parallel on DC side only please) to get you through the boost charge phase faster.

This hack is especially useful if you plan on four batteries vs two - you could also parallel a second inverter or two el-cheapo 12v chargers (unconventional and battery wiring must support this) but be sure any chargers you may add can both stay at the proper absorb voltage for your batteries and transit to float when done.

The overall cheapest method I have found to successfully use a small size, small charge capacity inverter with a relatively oversized battery bank is to incorporate a telecomms DC power supply as these are capable of safely charging the battery and cutting off when done - to be clear they are not battery chargers rather they are DC Power Supply Units and so cannot get your battery through absorb but only help to push through the boost phase faster.

To be clear, all inverter & charger parallel connections I mentioned are strictly battery side - do not attempt to parallel the inverter AC output side except the inverter explicitly supports this or you know a failure proof method to bring the two inverter phases in sync with each other.

Boss, the said inverter reviews are not so good. I think it is better if I get the Must Power Inverter. Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation.

It is the same. Same technology most likely same manufacturing process/facility. I use 30.5v for equalization. They (all the documentation I have read about Tubular FLA says 14.4 for absorption. Every last one from them from Luminous to Genus, Sukam and Eastman. I would suggest you stick to that.

Ok great..absorbtion is same as boost/bulk/cycle for 3 stage charge controllers abi?.

What voltage do you use for float?..27.4v?

I don't know about Famicare but I do know about the VilPower as I have used the old school dark grey generation and the current red top ones (I have the 6kw 48v) as my daily
driver for over one year now and also deployed various sizes to clients.

The older generation (dark grey/black) was far more rugged - the current red top versions have a lot more bells and whistles via dip switch settings which are of zero value to 99% of users - when the red Vil works then all is wonderful but when it breaks, the importer's warranty support is zero to very sketchy at best. You would have to transport the inverter to and from Alaba repair shop yourself and very likely pay the full cost of repairs + profit margin for the importer designated Alaba repairer.

For comparable sizes the equivalent Felicity Solar comes at a better price and far better warranty support (free same day repairs at Felicity Service Centre). If you are looking at 4kw/5kva or smaller sizes, I would say look at Felicity as a far better deal both in terms of price and customer support.

If you have a larger budget then you can go for the A&E Dunamis branded mustpower inverter - excellent in its class and very excellent customer service and support from the company.

To be clear, I am not bashing the Vil as a product - I have used and still use various iterations over 4 years and they are good old chug-alongs most of the time - the issue is if/when they fail then repairs at the importer designated repair shop are stressful and costly and you will have to pay out of pocket 95% of the time. If you are happy to pay top dollar to fix a product under warranty or if you have your own trustworthy repair facility then you are good to go.

Most Chinese Solar/Inverter Chargers call Absorption Boost.. which is constant voltage stage of charging.

And 27.4 is just right for float.

I second the review of Felicity. Their support from my experience is top nouch. I got their product from lagos and when I had issues. I was directed to their abuja office where the inverter was fixed no question asked. The whole board of the inverter was replaced after it was established that the issue (Thermostat stopped working) could not be fixed.

@ house..what is your harvest like this period as a ratio of your total panels...on a sunny day in the eainy season..i easily fot 4x to 5x my total panel capacity and instantenous harvest gets as higg as 80 to 100%

Now even with washed panels i average only 3x to 3.5x harvest.
A 2kw serup giving me 6kwh and a 3kw setup giving me 10kwh daily.with instantenous in peak sunlight around noon being 1.1kw and 1.5kw respectively

I think it has more ro do with rhe angle of the shn in the sky+haziness..than actual dust on the panels.
Curious to know your figures..if it tallies with mine.

bros it will be interesting to know from the house reviews on panels yield or setup harvest.

for me, I have really oversized my needs so I hardly notice poor harvest anymore. in fact, each time I push my setup to obtain higher instantaneous yield ends up in quick absorption charge. my highest ever is 4,138w of 5,250w
I also look forward to figures from the house to compare performance.

D. 1 x 250/60 Smartsolar CC
E. 12 x 280w mono panels in 6S2P configuration (Already owned)
F. 1 x Venus GX
G. 1 x Lynx Power-in/Distributor/shunt
H. 800Ah AGM battery bank (Already owned)
I. Relevant breakers, combiner boxes and cables
J. Sumec 6.5kva diesel generator (Already owned)

This is the setup i have in mind, but using the Quattro and 2# SCCs.

Anything else i need to purchase?
Do you think i should get the Anti islanding device?
* I'm looking at using 20 to 30% of the battery for self consumption, and the balance during grid failure.
* All Essential loads will be on AC out 1, and the remaining loads on AC out 2
* Grid to AC in 1, and Generator to AC in 2 limited to the gen capacity
* Timers to regulate some of the essential loads to keep below inverter capacity
* I have 5# water heaters on the essential bus on timers, and only one operates at a time.
* All the kitchen loads are on the essential bus, timed where necessary
* Infact, the only loads not on the essential bus are the ACs. They constitute ALL the non-essential loads
Thanks.

a. Anti Islanding preferred but your ESS performance will depend on the distance from nearest transformer and cabling size .
Try using LOM2 setting to achive stable operation

b. I doubt if the 8 KVA quattro will work with 6.5 KVA generator . It may not be stable. depends on the AVR in the machine

keep the FAQ in the mind https://www.victronenergy.com/live/multiplus_faq

c. I would suggest to move the heaters to nonessential loads and use generator in powerassist mode where necessary

It is much better to store the energy as hot water than in battery and than convert back at lower efficiency to heat water ( AGM battery 70 % efficiency) , victron 90% so approx 40 % energy loss if your PV production was stored in battery and reconverted back .

This has been my experience as well (pro-rated for my limited 1.8KWp 2s3p 24V setup out of a total 3.2KWp avaiable for use) on the Lekki axis for the past couple of weeks, or so. Normally, I would have recorded 1.4-1.7KW at peak.

I think I agree with your take on the situation.

pls be guided, the posted instantenous yield was during the rains few weeks back not now ooo. however the panels were washed before Christmas. (i can tell you it was very slippy ) so diy should take note pleaseeeeee!

my config is
300w 3s3p on 80A flexmax, max voc 130.5v
150w 5s3p on 60A flexmax, max voc 135.0v
and
300w late evening panel on Roy pwm cc decommissioned last week.

but like I have said, I have more that enough harvest to be impeded with the present haze/dust. my batteries are on float for an average of 6 hrs daily.

wow @ bolded...even in this harmattan
thats superb if so..thats like 80% of panel capacity in this harmattan haze!. whats your panel make n config?

Thanks for the feedback and link Pranil, I'll get back to you shortly.

Transformer is about 80m from my house.

Welcome all to 2019.
Quick question:
Want to get a 5kw MPPSolar axpert brand of inverter. I'm in a fix which to go for out of these two specs
Pip5048gk vs pip 5048mk
10mS vs 0ms, transfer time
500V vs 145V, Voc

Would have loved to have high Voc and zero transfer time in one. Since both are not possible at our budget, which of two is a preferred spec?

To me 0ms is a marketing strategy... 10 ms is fast enough..
