In the beginning, University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) was largely unaffected when Boko Haram started carrying out its heinous activities in Borno State. At the height of its reign of terror, UNIMAID could be described as a safe haven, far removed from the incessant attacks visited on the North-East. It was free from the devastating din of bombs and blasts. When many schools in Borno were shut down or destroyed, UNIMAID remained standing, majestic and delivering its mandate of providing higher education to Nigerians from all walks of life. This was after Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and governments in the North-East had estimated that over 1,500 schools had been destroyed in the region, including 524 in Borno State alone. But all that has since changed. UNIMAID has been violated.
