In April 2013, a Nigerian company Marine Platforms Limited ordered a Havyard 857 subsea vessel. On 5 November, Havyard’s shipyard in Leirvik in Sogn handed over the ship to the Nigerian company, and on the following day the ship was named and duly celebrated in Fosnavåg in Møre og Romsdal county. When the contract between Havyard and Marine Platforms was signed, many years had passed since the last time a Norwegian shipyard delivered a vessel to an African shipping company.

We already knew of Marine Platforms because they had bought an offshore vessel from one Norwegian shipping company and chartered one from another’, says Havyard CEO Geir Johan Bakke.

“When I met Taofik Adegbite, who is a co-founder, owner and CEO of Marine Platforms, he made a good impression on me right from the start. The first impression has been confirmed, and we have cooperated very well throughout the project. There have been challenges along the way, and we have to admit that the challenges relating to financing, have been somewhat greater than for most projects, but our cooperation has always been very constructive, and solution-oriented.

On the basis of our experience and the relationships we have built, we have great faith in the possibility of achieving more in cooperation with Marine Platforms and in the African market in future,” says the CEO.
The vessel bought by Marine Platforms was eventually named AFRICAN INSPIRATION.

ONITSHA —The Nigerian Air Force, yesterday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU with Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company, IVM, Nnewi, Anambra state for research and production of spare parts for its fighter jets.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, told newsmen in Nnewi, Anambra that the collaboration between the company and the Air Force had kept its jet fleet running for months now.
Abubakar, who was represented by the Chief of Policy and Planning, Air Vice-Marshal James Gbum, said the MoU would further solidify the collaboration, improve local content and engineering as well as save the country a lot of foreign exchange used in importing the expensive parts.
He said: “Our war efforts will be in vain if we don’t do something to ensure we get spare parts because some of our fighter aircrafts that have formed the back-bone of our struggle against Boko Haram, were once down due to lack of spare parts and mainly the break assemblies of these aircrafts.
“The Air Chief immediately ordered our research and development cell in Kaji to start to research into this break assembly overhaul. They went ahead and carried out the research. However, the first proto-type they brought couldn’t pass the test.
“The Nigerian Air Force later discovered that Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company at Nnewi, Anambra State is very capable of collaborating with the Nigerian Air Force to achieve the required standards of overhauling our break assemblies.”

Innoson Motors lays off 50 percent of workers

Nigeria’s pioneer indigenous vehicle manufacturing company, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited, has laid off about 50 percent of its work force, News Express learnt.

A source close to the company blamed the development on a combination of declining patronage by government, high cost of the dollar and difficulty in procuring foreign exchange for imported vehicle components.

Whereas the immediate past Federal Government of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and Anambra State Government under Mr. Peter Obi encouraged and patronised Innoson, the reverse is the case presently, with the incumbent Anambra State Government under the watch of Chief Willie Obiano preferring to import vehicles from the USA and elsewhere.

“Things are no longer the same at Innoson and the vehicle plant at Nnewi has laid off about 50% of the workers,” the source said.

The source also disclosed that Innoson Technical & Industrial Co. Ltd., producers of motorcycle parts and plastic products, has cut staff by some 25%. He said that Company Chairman, Mr. Innocent Chukwuma, started the retrenchment exercise from the Emene plant in Enugu State.

The source told News Express: “Mr. Chukwuma addressed the staff late in July and announced that because of the bad shape of the economy, 25% of the staff would have to go home and wait till December when they would be recalled if things improved.  The next day the list of affected staff was released and they had to go home after collecting their July salary. Of course, no one has been recalled because, rather than improve, the economy has become even worse since then.”
