Just for the records

It was like a carnival recently at the popular Nike Lake Hotel in Enugu, when Chief John Chiejina Nnaji was crowned the Onyendu Ndigbo in Kano by the Chairman, South-East Council of Traditional Rulers, His Royal Highness, Eze Dr. Cletus Ilomuanya who led other traditional rulers in the region at the occasion.

During the ceremony, which was graced by Igbo leaders at home and in the Diaspora, Chief Nnaji was endorsed by the region’s traditional council, Ohaneze Ndigbo and the South-East Governors’ Forum who sent a delegation to the coronation.

After the coronation and presentation of staff of office to the new Onyendu Ndi Igbo, Eze Ilomuanya praised Ndigbo in Kano for their patience and understanding while the leadership crises lasted and urged them to remain law-abiding and shun trouble.

He emphasised that the new Onyendu Ndigbo in Kano remains the only custodian of Igbo tradition in Kano and the representative of the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers in the state. He therefore urged Ndigbo in Kano to rally round him and give him all the supports he needed to carry out his duties.

Ilomuanya, who spoke on behalf of South-East Traditional Rulers also used the occasion to commend the efforts of Governor Ibrahim Shekarau whom he said has invested his time and resources towards ensuring that Igbo resident in Kano live in peace and harmony.

He described Governor Shekarau as a detribalised leader and a true nationalist who has demonstrated that there is unity in diversity through his appointment of non-indigenes into his cabinet and also his kind gestures towards non-indigenes resident in Kano.

The Eze also described Chief Chris Azuka, Special Adviser to Kano State Governor on Inter-Community Relations, as an illustrious Igbo son who has worked tirelessly towards ensuring that the image of Ndigbo in Kano was redeemed and prayed that God would continue to guide him and give him the wisdom to deal with issues at all times.

The coronation and endorsement of Chief John Chiejina Nnaji by the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers and Ohaneze Ndigbo has set the pace for the eventual turbaning and confirmation of his title as Sarki Ndigbo in Kano by the Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness, Dr. Ado Bayero which is expected to hold in the ancient city very soon.

Representatives of the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers and Ohaneze Ndigbo are expected to grace the occasion as they would formally introduce the Onyendu Ndigbo to the Kano Emirate Council before the turbaning.

It is on record that Igbo Community Association (ICA) in Kano was the first to abide by the directive of South-East Council of Traditional Rulers which directed that the issue of Eze Ndigbo in the Diaspora be put to rest by abolishing the title and its replacement with Onyendu (traditional leader) of the Igbo. In as much as the nomenclature of the title is changed, the roles and responsibilities of Onyendu Ndigbo in the Diaspora remains as they are the custodian of Igbo tradition as well as representatives of South-East Council of Traditional Rulers in their various states of residence.

Meanwhile, Chief Chris Azuka has called on Ndigbo in Kano to give adequate support to the office of Onyendu Ndigbo which he said deserved to be respected. He described Chief John Chiejina Nnaji as a responsible and respectable leader who has spent the major part of his time serving the people.

We need more of these kinds of appointments across Nigeria for better cohesion

There are two Ibos in Fasola's cabinet. Ben Akabueze and Joe Igbokwe. However the Eze Ndigbo is almost outlawed in Yorubaland since they tend to carry on as if they are government in government

ummm no disrepect to igbos but im kinda seeing this in the same light as hausas installing emirs every damn where.
keep emir in the north, eze in the SE and Oba in the ss/bini and SW

If an emir was to set up emirship in enugu we know all hell would break loose.

The Igbos have never installed anybody as eze kano, eze Lagos or whatsoever. What they have is eze ndigbo Lagos, eze ndigbo Kano etc. His leadership is only for the Igbos dwelling in such areas and does not extend to any other person.

Well that's really good, it affirms that non-indigenous citizens can actually be allowed to contribute in their host State. In Kano, there are 3 non-indigenous cabinet members and I think these things should be happening in every state.

It can help make everyone to feel a sense of belonging and responsibility instead of feeling like an unwanted alien.

Blueteeth,
There has always been Eze ndi Igbo in Oyo state for ages. Alafin of Oyo has no political powers to ban any Igbo title. He has never done that before. The crisis of Eze Ndi Igbo in Oyo state is domestic.
I hope this goes right deep down in your cranium.

Nigeria: Ndigbo in Oyo Deny President - Generals

Gbenga Abegunrin
2 February 2010

Ibadan — PPA governorship candidate in Anambra State, Uche Ekwunife, acknowledging cheers from traditional rulers at a rally in Onitsha, recently.

Oyo State branch of Ohanaeze Ndigbo on Monday declared that the president-generals of the five South-East states, who make up the Igbo General Assembly, have no power to speak on behalf of Igbo people living in Oyo.

The body in a statement signed by its President, Chief Ndidi Nzeako, and Secretary, Dr. Nwanze Okechukwu, blamed the lingering leadership tussle rocking the Oyo Igbo community on few rich Igbo indigenes, who want to impose themselves on others.

The statement added that the president-generals were part of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Oyo State, stressing that they actively participated in the December 2007 election that brought the present leadership of the group to office, and installing Alex C. Anozie as the Eze Ndigbo of Ibadan and Oyo State in 1997.

The Oyo Ohanaeze, however, lamented that it was unfortunate that the president-generals allowed themselves to be used by the people after what it described as controversial visit of the Eze Ilomuanya led South-East traditional rulers to Oyo State.

The group alleged that the visit of the traditional rulers was sponsored by former members of Ohanaeze, then the Igbo Community Development Association (ICDA), who lost out in the leadership tussle, but were determined to get it through foul means.

It stated further that Anozie remains the authentic Eze Ndigbo of Ibadan and Oyo State pending the outcome of the 15-man panel set up to examine the matter by the national headquarters of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

The Oyo Ohanaeze asked: "If Eze Ilomuanya's visitation and pronouncements were proper and acceptable to the Ohanaeze main body, why did the great body set up a 15-man panel that included four bishops to probe their visit and actions in Oyo and other states? The panel's report will soon come out."

The statement added that Ohanaeze, which is the umbrella body and mouthpiece of all Igbo people all over the world is the only body that can speak on behalf of Igbo people in Oyo State.
