Sometimes people fall into temptation of adultery and may later ask for forgiveness from God, but should such be confessed to ones spouse for the sake of restitution?

Obtain instruction from God whether to tell your partner
Do as God tells you
BUT
It doesn't free you from any consequence

You do not repent before confession rather you confess before repentance.

Confession to God only. with your mouth confession is made unto salvation (Romans 10:10)

Confess to God via prayer and repent from it.
