RESOLUTION OF THE#NIGERIAYOUTHACTION WITH RESPECT TO REMOVAL OF THE #NOTTOYOUNGTORUN BILL FROM FINAL CONSTITUTIONAL REVIEW REPORT OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

Yesterday, Sunday, 16th July, 2017, The #NigerianYouthAction held a brief emergency meeting in wake of a development in the National Assembly with regards to the #NotTooYoungToRun Bill which was reported to have been removed from the final report of of the NASS Constitution Review Committee.

The #NotTooYoungToRun Bill which is sponsored by Hon. Tony Nwulu seeks to reduce the constitutional age requirement to run for elective office in Nigeria with ultimate goal of promoting increased youth participation in political process and independent candidacy.

The bill, though passed at 1st and 2nd readings, was not included in the final report that was considered and adopted by the lawmakers at the Lagos retreat which held on 14 – 15 July 2017.

This development is a huge setback to the vision of the #NigerianYouthAction which seeks to promote youth participation in government and governance.

In the meeting was the Rivers State Coordinator of the #NotTooYoungToRun Campaign, Sen. Chiefson Nwaiwu.

After a brainstorming session which had in attendance Rivers State Coordinator of the #NotTooYoungToRun Campaign, Sen. Chiefson Nwaiwu, the following resolutions were made.

1. We would write to the National Assembly via official channels and express our disappointment on the recent development on the bill and urge that legislation on the bill be continued on the back drop of the progress already made.

2. We would ollaborate with the #NotTooYoungToRun Campaign via peaceful demonstrations and other activities in putting pressure on the National Assembly to continue as well as fast track further legislation on the bill.

3. We would carry out an aggressive social media campaign against any attempt to kill the bill and use same medium to mobilize our youths to join our cause.
