Nigerian Government Plans To Regulate Social Media by bouncenews2: 3:14pm On Jul 25, 2017

Federal authorities are planning to check social media comments to prevent the spread of fake news and hate speech
The government may want to look at your tweet, your Facebook post and those Instagram pictures, just to be sure you’re not out of line.

They plan to weed out posts on social media that are perceived to be aimed at dividing tribes and misinforming people.

The National Council on Information (NCI) has recommended the “setting up of a council to regulate the use of social media in Nigeria”.

The recommendation is contained in a communique issued at the end of Extraordinary Meeting of NCI on Hate Speeches, Fake News and National Unity held last week in Jos, Plateau state.

It was also suggested that Information managers at the state level should open a website that would immediately counter reports of any misinformation posted on social media.

The Council agreed it is necessary since social media might take over the 2019 elections, because Nigerians have come to rely on information published online.

The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who said social media has no address, and as such vetting and editing posting in social media might be difficult.
