Police have launched a crackdown on begging in Uyo city – urging shoppers not to give beggars money.
Officers say kind-hearted people give cash to beggars thinking they are helping those who are down on their luck and homeless.
But they stress many are actually drug addicts and pretenders who do have somewhere to live.
These people then, police said, simply use the cash to pay for more drugs

"Some people are not homeless and are misleading the public, taking advantage of their kindness and using the income from begging to fund their addictions and Laziness " said PC Udo Ini, police community management officer.
"We need the public to understand that providing people with money largely given in good faith is having a detrimental effect.
"We ask that if you feel compelled to give money, that you do so by giving it to charity."
Police have now launched a campaign and are asking the public not to fund begging but to instead give cash to charities which support the homeless and addicted.

Businesses are being supplied with posters to display, bearing the slogan "Your kindness could kill".
And beggars are being targeted as part of the campaign too, though police stress the idea is to help them to a better way of life.
Beggars are being given information on where to get help with issues such as addiction and homelessness.
But they are also being warned they could be arrested if they don't stop asking the public for cash.
Officers came up with the campaign in conjunction with charities and support agencies which help such people.
They said the main idea of the campaign is to help beggars turn their lives around.

The leaflets contain a list of places where the unfortunate can go for help.
But police stressed those that persistently continue to beg risk being subject to "enforcement action".

Beggars are trapped in a desperate cycle of begging from us. If we refuse them money we may help break that cycle and maybe even encourage them to seek help. And find a handwork.
Addicts need real change, not spare change. But that doesn’t stop me worrying about beggars aren’t addicts who could benefit from my coppers. And even addicts have to eat. Charities have limited resources and rules. They can’t reach everyone.

The state has decided that all beggars seek help from the various councils rather than resort to begging because the state is willing to help them.
We should also note that 90% of beggars are not indegenes but from the northern part of the country.
