CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA: Is It Institutional Or Attitudinal? by dankol: 5:06am On Jul 28, 2017 |
Nigeria is ranked 136th in the corruption index according to Transparent International (Report 2015), maintained same 2016. Recently, a former minister under the past administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, made a very sensitive statement about corruption in Nigeria. He said “I have continued to insist that corruption in Nigeria is predominantly more attitudinal than institutional. And the emphasis must be placed on refraining, remolding and re-orientating the attitude”. For some persons, corruption is a thing that is prevalent among our leaders as a function of the institution they represent or office; for others it is an innate characteristics in every Nigerian and is exhibited by all and sundry. It is much more attitudinal...it seems to flow in the blood of an average nigerian either at the top level, middle class or the common man on the street. We just seems to have the tendency to dupe, bribe, cheat or take advantage of others and the solution lies more on re-orientation or any program that focus on attitudinal change while giving serious punishment to offenders as deterrent. |

It's a combination of both. While I must admit that it's more attitudinal, fighting it will not yield fruit using attitudinal methods of reorientation, remodeling and all that. Since corruption is obviously inherent in we Nigerians, we must learn to make our institutions tight, close loopholes that permits corruption, and apply modern technology in our institutions as such helps to prevent corruption. BVN is a very helpful tool, TSA too, is somewhat helpful. We must fashion out our institutions using modern technology to minimize unwholesome practices. Our leaders are corrupt as a result of our corrupt nature and we must use transparent institutions to disband corruption. |
