Constitution amendment: ‘We’ll ensure Senators don’t come back in 2019’ – Akiyode-Afolabi Chairperson, Transition Monitoring Group, and Executive Director, Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre, WARD-C, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, has declared that the group of Senators at the National Assembly would be voted out in 2019. The Senate had on Wednesday rejected a proposal to provide women with 35% of all appointments at federal and state cabinets. Akiyode-Afolabi said the senators had only succeeded in showing their gross insensitivity to women issues. Addressing reporters, the women leader vowed, “For that, we will ensure that they are not returned. They will know what women are made of; we will use our numbers to resist this injustice. Enough is enough.” In the same vein, a civil right activist, and Chairman of Human and Environmental Development Agenda, HEDA, Olanrewaju Suraj, said, “For us, it is important that National Assembly respects the right of women. “Constitutional amendments are not just another killer; it is the right of the people to enjoy equal freedom and also to promote gender equality. Constitution amendment: Senate primitive, stone age – Itse Sagay Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay has described Nigerian Senate as primitive and stone age. This came as the proposal for women to express themselves in the polity was voted against by the Senate in the process of the constitution amendment. Reacting to the votes, Sagay told newsmen in Abuja that “The Senators have demonstrated their hostilities to women and the best thing that can be said about them is that they have no regard for women. “In our society, we cannot make progress without our women folk. “In fact, if you notice, where there is equal opportunity, women even tend to do better. “So, pulling them down as it is happening now will have devastating effects on our progress and development. “I would say the Senate’s reaction to women is extremely primitive and stone age.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/07/28/constitution-amendment-senate-primitive-stone-age-itse-sagay/ http://dailypost.ng/2017/07/28/constitution-amendment-well-ensure-senators-dont-come-back-2019-akiyode-afolabi/

I am fully in support of the decision of senate to reject the inclusion of 35% affirmative action in the constitution. Women who desire to hold elective and appointive political positions should compete on equal terms with men. We are already having issues with implementing quota system and federal character principle that are in our constitution. We cannot add another unimplementable 35% action to it. All human beings are created equally, we should all be allowed to compete equally on a level playing field. 2 Likes |

I commend the Senate for rejecting that kind of rubbish!!! The Northern cabal would have hijacked it by ensuring that all the 35% women come from the south WHILE the Northern Men enjoy all 65% position for men Please the appointments should be kept on a level playing ground for both Men & Women to struggle for it joor, no preferential treatment because women have shown that they are not better off than their male counterparts in politics in terms of corruption. If I'm lying, please ask Patience & Dieziani!!! #NoRoomForLaziness |

seunmsg: Women need a little support for a while. The affirmative action can be time bound. Isn't that what development is all about. Helping people to help themselves? |

aolawale025: I am not really against affirmative action but I am fully against putting it in our constitution. We can support women to get to the peak of their political aspirations without making it a constitutional matter. |

aolawale025: For your information most of the men in governance are influence by their wife at home. When you say women support you make the women weak Nobody stop any woman from contesting in any position in government |

The bill truly doesn't make sense. Women should be appointed based on merit and not because the constitution says so. |
