The war that raged between the leadership of the Student Union Govenment Abuja University Chapter and the Student Representative Assembly (SRA) has been settled as the suspended SUG President, Ajiboye Abdulazez Okoye and his excos have been recalled back.
It was gathered that the reason for the suspension was to pave way for an unbiased investigation into the activities of the union because there was an allegation claiming misappropriation, diversion and abuse of office levied against the SUG.
In a joint press conference by the institution, the event the Speaker of the SRA, Rt. Hon. Onwosi Timothy, simply stated that the suspension of the Okoye led SUG was without prejudice.
Hon. Timothy said that a disciplinary committee was constituted and that no iota of truth was so ever as regards the allegations levied against the SUG government, saying news that made the rounds on the social media was a figment of the originators imagination.
‘’The impasse that led to the suspension of the Student Union Government is by no means a witch hunting assembly; we are focused and poised to carry out our legitimate legislative function which is to oversight the functions of the SUG. That is the reason why we constituted a committee to investigate the allegations,’’ he said.
He explained that the SRA is an organized entity, adding that they are convinced that the funds are disbursed adequately to suppliers.
‘’We have lift the suspension,’’ he said, adding that they observed that the earmarked projects are ongoing.
‘’We noticed some ambiguities in the activities of the union, and that was why we investigated, the President and his excos. They have defended the allegations and we are satisfied with their response. It is also worthy of note that the impasse is as a result of a communication breakdown occasioned by a division in the Assembly which has now been settled and state that the SUG has been given a clean bill of health and has been officially communicated to that effect.’’
Speaking at the event, Comrade Okoye, the SUG President stated that his mission as the leader of the students is to protect their interest and that the allegations were unfounded.
He, however, frowned at the irresponsible journalism void of decorum targeted at his person noting that the reason why the assembly was not up to date with the activities of the union was a leadership tussle that almost consumed the Parliament and noted that normalcy had since been restored and that the gulf between the SUG and the Parliament has been cemented.
Okoye said the Six Months reign of his government has recorded a lot of land mark achievements which includes the construction of speed breakers on both ends of the expressway and that the SUG shuttle was contracted and that payments were made into the union account and all grey areas have been resolved.
