Looking at the first line, we could arrive at 12 using different combinations :

1+11=12
2+10=12
3+9=12

Likewise for the second line. So there are several answers to this question ,depending on the combinations you use

You don't just combine as u like in mathematics. That is why we substitute the woman for x and man for y.

The first woman there represents an entity. We don't know it's value, therefore it is wrong to assume that the first entity equals or is exactly the same as the second entity. Hence it is wrong to asymmetric that
x + x =12

I beg to differ. You can introduce variable once you can clearly define the entities. Your assumption can only be right when there is a slight or total difference in the images in the equations.

To make it clear to you, solve the below

If x+x=12
And y+y=30

Then y.y+6= ?
When you finish, you will explain how the 1st x represents an entity and the second represents another
