Rasheed Bisiriyu

About four years after the introduction of a new automotive policy by the Federal Government , 53 automakers have so far received approval to establish auto assembly plants in the country .

Already , many of the automakers have commenced operation , leading to the production of 10 ,673 automobiles at the end of last year .

The Nigerian Automotive Design and Development Council gave the figures on Wednesday in a presentation at the Automotive Industry Implementation and Monitoring Committee ’s meeting held in Lagos , which was presided over by the new Director - General, NADDC , Mr . Jelani Aliyu .

Although the council said the installed production capacity of the nation ’s auto assembly plants had hit 408 ,870 automobiles , the 10 ,673 vehicles produced in 2016 represented just about 10 per cent of that capacity.

Despite several challenges militating against the operation of the assembly plants and the success of the auto policy , the council expressed the optimism that the number of this year ’s locally assembled vehicles would surpass last year ’s.

Already , it said the assembly plants had between January and July this year produced 8 ,473 automobiles .

Part of the measures to encourage more production of vehicles locally and continued patronage was the enforcement of an Executive Order by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to all Ministries , Departments and Agencies of the government to buy made -in -Nigeria vehicles .

In 2013, the NADDC said 1 ,605 vehicles were assembled locally ; that was when only 11 firms had approval to assemble vehicles in Nigeria .
The staff strength of all the assembly plants , according to the council , has risen from 745 in 2014 to 4 ,782 currently.

The Director of Policy and Planning , NADDC , Dr. Luqman Mamudu , enumerated a number of factors “why we cannot match the installed production capacity with the operating capacity,” including challenges arising from the Customs administration and poor infrastructure limits on logistics ; access to limited foreign exchange by the sector ; unrestrained importation of pre -owned automobiles ; and smuggling .

To curb the importation of all manner of used vehicles , he stated that the Federal Government was ready to enforce a directive that only automobiles with certificates of roadworthiness would be allowed into the country , going forward .

Meanwhile , the new DG of the NADDC has challenged all automakers to produce low -cost vehicles that will be affordable and readily available for private and commercial uses .

Aliyu said while the automakers should be mindful of the happenings globally in the automotive industry , “let ’s look at new technologies that we can adapt for Nigeria , with the ultimate goal of providing cost -effective vehicles for the people .”

He urged all stakeholders to come together to develop the industry and pledged that the current administration was willing to give the necessary support to make it a win -win situation for both the government and genuine investors .

Good, same Jelani Aliyu(a Nigerian) is the original designer of the Chevrolet volt. It's a good thing the Buhari administration brought him from the U.S to head over such a task. He would rebrand the assembly industry in Naija with new techniques and craft to compete with the best in the world.

I know you are entitled to your pessimistic opinion, but I guess you read where Aliyu said
let ’s look at new technologies that we can adapt for Nigeria , with the ultimate goal of providing cost -effective vehicles for the people”, meaning there is probably a design concept in the works to that end, so that you wouldn't necessarily need to be a millionaire to own a new car.

Don't just swallow all u read. Will they source for the material from heaven? Even the cheapest Tesla model 3, cost 35,000 usd. It's not rocket science, if oda things aren't working, are not cheap, it can never be cheap. Unless they want to start subsidizing dollar for such project (only a dunce will do such).
Modified : where jelani comes from, they don't waste his time by making him to head a ministry, they put him where exactly he is needed, designing.

Now I disagree with you to some extent.

-Nigeria has enough millionaires to buy the 400k capacity
-Nigerians does not have to be the ones to buy the whole 400k capacity
-The questions we should be asking is what kind of vehicles are these automakers making, and what kind of vehicles do Nigerians want/need,
-With my experience in the tech industry in Nigeria, what drives consumer purchase in Nigeria is after sales service annd maintenance, (no accessible service no buy for most Nigerians, from gadgets to heavy-dutys)

Cars that are less than #2.5m with great after sales service will thrive in the Nigerian auto industry, cars that was designed from the scratch having the Nigerian market in mind, including buying power, leveraging heavily on factors that could reduce production cost, and not just taking a foreign blueprint and just bringing in the SKD or CKD parts to come and assembly here and expect the industry to blow up.

**but then we have guys that are too lazy to think about what percentage of 400k is 10k, so what do we expect

You nailed it bro. It would've made more sense if Jelani was appointed the head of a new design institution (or help establish one) that would oversee the training of future industrial designers, or the FG could've established an automotive company and have him develop indigenous designs and get them into production. His current appointment as an admin head doesn't sit well with his professional ability.

Volkswagen as we know it started out that way. Adolf Hilter established the company to make cars for the masses, hence its name 'The peoples car'

I agree with u to some extent.
Ajaokuta and co can serve Nigeria and the neighboring country but we are yet to make a headway, we wanna start producing cars but almost all the fundamentals are missing. Don't blame those who doesn't patronize Nigeria product, alot of Nigeria product are just a bad example over and over again eg, ricgico tomato paste, the company claims it to be the healthiest dan d Chinese ones and is d best certify by nafdac also, but if u taste that poo, u will cry and weep for d producer, another example is innoson, he will keep drumming that his cars are made in Nigeria, for goodness sake, he doesn't even have a design team here, all they do is assemble one of those Chinese vehicles, he will claim heaven and earth but with nothing to support it, no crash test, no reviews by professionals, no specifications in d open, all is just like a primary pupil words. Also, a good vehicle wount cost like 2.5 m, maybe if we start developing the economy, in years to come we can talk a about this again... Mind u, there are many industry that can easily be set up in Nigeria and thrive that will support the future auto industry and doing it now, will give us a heads tart, oda Africans can patronize us, if we offer international quality

Then this begs the questions, who are those good at heading ministries?

Besides who said they are building a TESLA for Nigerian market?

You mean there is no point for us to even try?

There is a reason we study administration in school. Most administrators have their special field too, administration is also by talent. Also, most administrators that head some of these positions have been in the industry for long and has been part of the system all along.
No one is saying Nigeria should not start o, but wait, do we have any functional industry to support this automotive industry? We have d raw materials, but all the supply chain industry are missing...
I can bet that Mr jelani at the end of the day achieve almost nothing, why? We need the rules, the regulations, the industries to be in effect before we talk of the designer(jelani worked as purely a designer, now he will have to be, a lawyer, a broker, a thinker, to mention a few) ... How long do u think it can take? Or we wanna source for all the parts in US or UK or China or Germany or France? It makes no sense if we are gonna call it, made it Nigeria. At worst, let us have functional industry, transparency, rules and regulations that works and source for some of the parts here.. .

Now let's disagree to agree

Looking at a typical modern day vehicle there are about 10,000 patented technology in it, like the Tesla and Benz
Now if we are looking at starting with vehicles like that we wont fly, because we haven't even learned to crawl yet

Let's start with the basics, an semi-comfortable safe mini car/hatch back or Sedan that can move people and luggage from point A to point B, the basics

We can't be aiming to manufacture cars that looks like the present 2015-2017 crop and expect the industry to boom

Secondly, we should also setup industries to produce, car seats, upholstery, mirrors, the light cases n less technical components like that, and import other technical components from OEMs outside

If we setup those industries, plants and factories they'll get patronage from the auto assemblers/"makers"

..and we'll be more closer to manufacturing a brand new car that'll cost #2m
