Pensioners in Osun State on Thursday slaughtered two animals — a black goat and a white ram — claiming that the act would strengthen their prayers for Governor Rauf Aregbesola to pay their outstanding pensions and gratuities. They also doled out the cut-up flesh of the sacrificial animals to beggars. They said the sacrifice would strengthen the prayers compelling Aregbesola to pay their entitlements from the Paris Club loan refund. Explaining the reasons for their action, a leader of the pensioners, Mr. Yemi Lawal, said, “We decided to take our case to Aregbesola’s creator in prayer because the suffering is too much.” They had open confrontations with policemen guarding the state secretariat, as they were prevented from slaughtering the two rams in front of the building. The incident happened when the pensioners staged a fresh protest over Aregbesola’s alleged reluctance to use a part of the Paris Club loan refund to pay their entitlements. The protest by the pensioners who occupied one of the two lanes that lead to the State Secretariat took a new dimension when the Christians among them gathered on one side and prayed fervently to God to “wage war against our oppressors;” while the Muslims also gathered beside the Christians, praying that Allah should not give the governor rest until he pays their outstanding entitlements. The Muslims recited the holy Qu’ran and said they would not cease to pray until the governor pays them. The pensioners said they had lost “so many” of their colleagues because they could not afford to obtain medical treatment as necessary due to non-payment of their pensions and gratuities. There was a mild drama when the pensioners decided to slaughter a black goat and a white ram, which they claimed were required for their prayers to be completed. The pensioners insisted that they would slaughter the animals in front of the secretariat, but policemen prevented them. After exchange of hot arguments, Lawal, dragged the two animals to a house far from the secretariat, where they slaughtered them. He later told journalists that the meat would be distributed to beggars. Lawal said, “We fixed today for these special prayers without knowing that Aregbesola’s mother’s fidau would also hold today. “We didn’t know that the woman would die on Monday. “The fund he collected before the second tranche of Paris Club loan refund was enough to settle our pension arrears and gratuities. “He needs to add some money to the fund he just got and that would pay us, but he didn’t do that. “He said the amount of money spent to pay the arrears of July 2015 for workers and pensioners was about N950m, whereas they claim they paid N2.6bn. “During the last two weeks, a huge amount of money was released to Governor Rauf Aregbesola in form of second tranche of Paris Club loan refund totaling N6.314bn, internally generated revenue and PAYE N9.5bn, July 2017 monthly allocation of N5.9bn, including refund of works on federal roads released to Osun State by the Federal Government and a host others.” It may be recalled that Osun State had paid half salaries for more than 24 months. http://punchng.com/unpaid-gratuities-osun-pensioners-take-case-to-aregbesolas-creator-slaughter-rams-to-strengthen-prayers/ |
