A hostile working environment, poor reward system, the dearth of needed equipment and huge funding gaps, among others, are pushing Nigerian doctors out of the country in search of jobs abroad.

A new survey conducted by Nigerian polling organisation, NOIPolls, in partnership with Nigeria Health Watch, has revealed that about eight out of every 10 (88 per cent) of medical doctors in Nigeria are currently seeking work opportunities abroad.

The survey report was unveiled in Abuja Thursday by the Chief Executive Officer of NOIPolls, Dr. Bell Ihua.
The findings cut across junior, mid and senior level doctors in both public and private medical institutions such as house officers, corps members, medical and senior medical officers, residents, registrars, consultants and medical directors.

The United Kingdom and the United States of America are the top destinations where Nigerian medical doctors seek work opportunities, according to the survey.

Consequently, many Nigerian doctors are currently registered to write foreign medical exams such as PLAB for the UK (30 per cent), USMLE for the United States (30 per cent), MCCE for Canada (15 per cent), AMC for Australia (15 per cent) and DHA for Dubai (10 per cent), among others.

In fact, an official of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Dr. Abimbola Olajide, revealed that facts at the disposal of his association show that no fewer than 2,500 doctors are due to leave the country in the next one month, in search of greener pasture.

Further findings from the NOIPolls survey revealed that the reasons for the looming brain drain in the health sector included challenges such as high taxes and deductions from salary (98 per cent), low work satisfaction (92 per cent), poor salaries and emoluments (91 per cent) and the huge knowledge gap that exists in the medical practice abroad (47 per cent), among others.

The report said: “These were some of the key findings from the survey and we hope these findings would help stimulate conversations amongst stakeholders in the country’s health sector and trigger the much-needed reforms to redesign of a health system that is responsive to the healthcare needs of the nation.

“This survey also seeks to sound an alarm of a looming brain drain in the country’s health sector if nothing is done urgently to curb this rising trend of emigration of healthcare practitioners – physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists amongst others.”

Various stakeholders, who spoke at the unveiling of the report, said the government at federal and state levels needed to urgently address what had become a national emergency and embarrassment.

Nigeria has about 72,000 medical doctors registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, with only approximately 35,000 practising in Nigeria.

The emigration of the Nigerian healthcare workforce, particularly medical doctors has been a lingering problem in the country.

Too bad. While I condemn the government already, many of us are so unwilling to make sacrifices. Other persons made sacrifices to better their country.
The Nigerian doctor lives almost above average and it's the only career professional in Nigeria that enjoys good privileges as job-guarantee and good pay.
We must all learn to live our country. I want to leave Nigeria only to improve myself, come back and give back to Nigeria as Awolowo and Azikiwe did. God bless Nigeria.

ARCON/NIA has registered 1513 architects in a space of 15 YEARS!!

that's approximately 100.8 architects every year for the last 15 Years!

Each of the 15 schools above has graduated a conservative average of 50 student architects a year. That's 50 students x 15 schools = 750 students x 15 years (2003-2017) = 11,250 potential architects (not counting those from unacreddited schools)

ARCON/NIA have registered a woeful 1,513 architects of 11,250 potential architects over the last 15 years.

They've been admitting 100.8 a year over the last 15 years when they should have been registering approximately 750 a year! 100/750

I dont blame them....why wont they seek for opportunities outside this country when they are under valued. How many hospitals do we have? how much is a medical doctor paid here? are we even ready to revamp our health sector?
We have the best brains in medical practice..we train them with little or nothing yet these young men and women will be thrown out and no jobs for them.

The older doctors and consultants are not even ready and willing to allow these young men and women practice well and and learn.
Our government is not even looking in the area of health to make it work.
Go to our hospitals and see how rotten it look and is run...\

I have a couple of friends who are doctors,,they all have left the shores of this country to work in mainly the middle east and European countries...they are earning well, working in a structured environment and ready to commit their times for their service and reward.

WHAT SORT OF SACRIFICE DO YOU WANT A DOCTOR TO MAKE? IS IT WHERE THERE IS NO FUNCTIONAL HEALTH FACILITY? WHERE A GENERAL HOSPITAL REFERS A PATIENT TO RUN A SCAN OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL? WHERE DRUGS ARE NEVER AVAILABLE IN THE HOSPITAL? WHERE DOCTORS RUN SEVERAL SHIFTS AND ARE OWED? WHERE NOTHING IS ACTUALLY WORKING?....ISNT IT ENOUGH SACRIFICE..ABII LET HIM DIE FOR YOU undecided undecided undecided undecided
Every heath worker is underrated in Nigeria..

Every day hospitals in Dubai and Saudi Arabia comes to Nigeria to pick our best doctors....currently many young doctors i know are seriously saving up funds to apply for visa to leave the country.
Even after spending over 8 years in school ..many of them dont mind enrolling afresh in a foreign country...you think that is funny?

Yet the government is so insensitive and blind...assuming we are doing well.No wonder our president is comfortably sitting in a foreign hospital.

Shame cry cry

Status?Do you know what a doctor in Nigeria earns and what a doctor abroad earns?Do you know it means to work in a clean environment and have equipments and drugs to work with? It's more than just mere status. It's a huge gap.
