Osinbajo receives globally acclaimed Nigerian-born medical doctor who performed remarkable feat in U.S.
August 6, 2017

Sani Tukur
The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Sunday received a U.S.-based Nigerian doctor who led a team that performed a remarkable feat.
Mr. Osinbajo received Oluyinka Olutoye, a Houston, U.S.-based Nigerian doctor who successfully led a medical team that operated on a foetus, winning U.S. and global acclaim for the feat.
In a rare medical feat that drew global applause, Mr. Olutoye brought out the foetus from a mother, Margaret Boemer’s womb to remove a tumour from the foetus, and then restored the unborn baby to the womb successfully.
The mother then continued to carry the pregnancy to term, and later on, delivered the baby safely and well. She named her Lynlee Hope.
Mr. Osinbajo told Mr. Olutoye, who was accompanied to the Presidential Villa by members of his family including his wife and parents, that “our country continues to shine in various ways, your achievement is remarkable in every sense. People are bound to wonder. It’s the kind that fables are made of. And this is from someone who is Nigerian-trained.”
According to the acting president, “this country can be well run, we produce the best in every way, but it will take a lot of doing, by good men and women. This is what I have learnt in the past two years here. If we do the right things, day by day, we’ll change and improve the Nigerian situation significantly.”
The acting president also said “the problem is not about the availability of resources, but it’s the management,” recalling how the federal government is now doing more when funds are scarce than in the days when oil was selling at over $100 per barrel.
“When we were making over a $100 per barrel, we were owing oil JVC cash calls, not able to pay salaries and owing contractors. Now that we are down in earnings by 60 per cent, we have sorted out the problem of cash calls and are able to support states to pay salaries,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Mr. Olutoye attributed his medical successes in the U.S. to his Nigerian training and education up till the university.
He is a graduate of Medicine from the then University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University.
“All we have achieved from primary to university is from Nigeria, and I believe that Nigeria will surpass what we have achieved out there,” he said.

Why is honouring the Dr, amounts to playing politics?

What does oil prices and paying salaries have to do with honouring a doctor? Why isn't he talking about taping the doctor to help revive the health sector for instance?

Stating fact should not be construed as playing politics. A corrupt past is the reason why we have wasted all the previous opportunities. That is the simple truth. A corrupt system can be liken to a man fetching water from a tap with a basket. That is where we were coming from and any God fearing and honest person will admit that much

A tribal section should be created to take care of the tribal collision between the East and the West.

I was hoping to see a fellow Nigerian who has made us proud only to see certain comments already trying to capture the soul of this thread in the usual Ayebe' way.

When will this boring nonsense stop? The agitation for restructuring should be extended to this forum.

All the same, congratulations doctor.

undecided Useless country that wants to identify with success they never did anything to nurture. This doomed nation has so much talent that if with d right leadership we wud ve had a pool of highly trained and resourceful youths.

Those who do sciences, engineering and medical courses and studied both in Nigeria and abroad wud see the huge difference between modern 21st century education and archaic system of education in Nigeria with dilapidated labs and if there are equipment they are old model and that is y our graduates trained locally can never measure up to d challenges of d 21st century.

Not to talk of outdated curriculum as some of our lecturers still give their notes of 80's to students in 2017

What of incessant strikes by ASUU, NASU, SSANU that wud make a student spend more years than necessary when he or she must ve spent years waiting to get in, in the first place.

No wonder our looters in power send their kids abroad to school cos they know the wide gap between our educational system abroad and what u ve home. Even the least rated school in Europe and America is far ahead of our so called presitgious ivory towers if they even ve any prestige at all.

Also, the excellent performance of Nigerian students abroad attests to d fact that if given the right environment, Nigerians would always excel even far beyond set expectations. But sadly, most of the abundant talented youths whose skills should ve been nurtured, groomed, mdeveloped and subsequently harnessed for the good of all rots away.

Nigeria is a ground for destroying destinies but when some are able to succeed the useless country would always want to identify with success they never made any contribution to.

U see many Nigerians who ve excelled in their chosen fields abroad and when they make waves the useless govt wud want to identify with them as if they did anything to contribute to d success of that individual and obviously if that person had been in Nigeria is 101% certain that such individual may never have gotten to d peak of their career perharp some may ve died from frustration.

I knew of his exploits way back,
He and his lovely wife are trendsetters in TX

He is an alumni of oau,
I guess he is in Nigeria to raise the awareness for that intricate medical conditions for infants, and seek ways of partnership with our home based medical practitioners,

In a way the brain - drain - gain in the northern hemisphere will have a reverse advantageous boomerang to the emergent nations of Southern hemisphere, especially Nigeria,
If government can give inticing incentives, guarantee their security, better renumeration, good working conditions,
Many willing medical expertriates will fall in line, and we will be better for it,

We mustn't be our own enemy, today I saw a media scoop of how Dr. Godwin maduka based in Nevada, built a multi million worth court and it's yet to be used by the judges, and he is building one of the largest medical hubs in sub-saharan Africa right there in his home town, umuchi in anambra with a superstructure of 17storeys, this is preposterous tactical ploy of discouragement and dissuasion.
We should not be our own enemy,

We as a country is falling below the mark in churning out medical practitioners, and we are losing many to brain drain,
Our leaders use public fund for their health care abroad, To the detriment of the growth of our health sector, and causing capital flight via their medical tourisms.
The downtrodden that can't afford such, are left in the cold embrace of death,
We still got high mortality rate, high mortality infant rate, low life expectancy, polio, inadequacy in medical research institutions, even existententiality of longevity of existent health institutions are under threat and decadence is snurfing life out them, unfortunately, we're still heavily dependent for vaccinations,

A cursory look at the loggerhead amidst the National health insurance scheme and ministry of health, gives an insight to how we are our own enemy.
Imagine what the impermanence of incessant strikes by medical practitioners have dealt us, coupled with how agencies cut corners beyond professional ethics to aid high magnitudnal ineptitude and quackery
