A faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance loyal to the former chairman of the party, Chief Chekwas Okorie, has said that the governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, was not the right candidate of the party in last Saturday‘s governorship election.
Addressing a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Mr. George Ozodinobi, who was nominated by Okorie as the party‘s candidate before he was dropped by the Independent National Electoral Commission, insisted that he was the right candidate of the party.
He said since the Supreme Court had ruled that it was the party that voters normally vote for and not individual, he was the winner of the election and not Obi.
He therefore said that he and his running mate, Dr. Okey Umeano, were duly elected in the election.
Ozodinobi said the Certificate of Return given to Obi by INEC was done in error and that he was already in court to challenge that.
He said, ”We have always maintained the position that Anambra State and indeed all the states of the South-East geopolitical zone have always embraced APGA as their own.
”Our people‘s solidarity with APGA has once again been demonstrated incontrovertibly. In spite of the leadership crisis in the party that has persisted till this day, the sentiments and emotions expressed by the good people of Anambra State to APGA has remained solid, unwavering and cannot again be overstated.
”However it is our wish to reassure the members of public who remain confused about the suit in which APGA, our party has sued for the Order of Mandamus from court of competent jurisdiction to compel INEC to obey the wish of this party APGA and substitute Mr. Peter Obi with my humble self, George Ibezimako Ozodinobi and my running mate, Dr. Okey Umeano.
”The consequence envisaged therefore is that only political party sponsors candidates for election and only political parties win election.
”I, Hon. George Ibezimako Ozodinobi and my running mate Hon. Dr. Okey Umeano remain the legitimate APGA candidate for the just concluded February 6 governorship election of Anambra State.
The public and INEC should be guided by the Supreme Court Judgment on the case of Hon. Rotimi Amechi versus Mr. Celestine Omehia to announce the party that has won the election in Anambra State, in this case APGA, instead of pre-empting the Court by annoucing Peter Obi as the beneficiary of the mandate of the people of Anambra State to APGA which has always been the party of their choice.
”The just concluded governorship election translates that the election was fought and won by APGA.
”We expect the court to determine who the authentic candidate of APGA is, since the party APGA complied with the rules guiding the election having in their correspondence of the December 4, 2009 to INEC specifying the cogent and verifiable reasons based on which the party‘s candidate should remain George Ibezimako Ozodinobi and his running mate, Dr. Okey Umeano.”

This is really becoming dicey and not yet over for Mr Obi, the supreme court has already set a precedent in the past that the party is the owner of the vote and not the candidate. But the question is where was this guy all this while before obi won the recent past election? What was the party chieftains doing if obi was not their right candidate seeing that he was representing the party.?.
