WORLD Bank is to spend $60 million (N21 billion) to build 500 rural roads in Abia State to enable farmers evacuate their agricultural produce. The project would be executed under the Federal Government’s Rural Assess and Agricultural Marketing Project, RAAM, aimed at boosting the government‘s paradigm shift in agriculture. Speaking, yesterday, at a stakeholders’ workshop, which involved traditional rulers and leaders of thought from rural communities, whose roads were selected for the programme, national coordinator of the programme, Mr. Ularamu Ubadoma, explained that some of the roads will have bridges to link them with other communities. Ubadoma said the stakeholders’ meeting was conveyed to enable the traditional rulers and leaders of thought to make input into the various roads selected in their area so as to be on the same page with the World Bank and Abia State Government. According to him, if there were critical roads that were not captured or if any of the roads captured has already been taken up by any other agency, there would be some adjustments, saying the programme is purely grassroots-based. “We are looking at areas with difficult terrain to open them up for development,” Ubadoma said.
