Yesterday, in Owerri, a man rejected the call of death as he supposedly left his house only to smoke a cigarette and his building collapsed after he left, killing three persons and an 18-month-old baby girl, Osinachi Nnabue.

Following the sudden collapse, eight persons were saved from the collapsed three storey building on Fire Service/Mbaise Road in Owerri municipality and the rescue mission lasted for many hours.

Mr. and Mrs Dominic Nnabue, parents of the dead baby, and one Sunday Uzoho were divinely saved from death and were speedily rushed to the hospital after they suffered injuries.

An amazed eye witnesses, Mr. Nnamdi iheme, stressed that, said “This man walked out from his room between 3 and 4am to have a stick of cigarette and only came back to behold that the building he came out from had collapsed. He was the person that actually raised the alarm, which attracted other people.”

Another eyewitnesses, Okochukwu Nnadi, explained yesterday that the collapse occurred by 4am.

“I came out very early to convey early morning worshipers to church before the building collapsed .

“I was the one who rushed to the police station near the house to alert them on the incident.

“I was shocked to see four people already dead when they were brought out of the place.”

Mr Evans Ugoh, the coordinator of Owerri Operations, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), attested to the incident and also disclosed the ongoing rescue mission.

“We have been able to rescue five people while four have been confirmed dead, but we are still on to see if there are others trapped in the building,” he said.

The Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, visited the scence and said:

“This is very sad. I will take drastic measures to checkmate sub-standard buildings in this state, regardless of who is involved.”

He stressed that the state government will handle the payment of the hospital bills of the affected persons and also explained that the incident was caused by sub-standard building materials used for construction.

He also thanked all those to took part in the rescue mission.
