In three weeks, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party hopes that a reconciliatory committee will be able to bring all the aggrieved party members in Anambra State together. The Vice-Chairman of the party in the South-East, Olisa Metu said in Abuja yesterday that the disharmony among the members led to the dismal performance of the party at the just concluded governorship election in the state.

He said the situation was so bad that some aspirants of the party had openly campaigned for the governor of the state, Peter Obi who belonged to a rival party, to win the election at the expense of their own party .

“The situation must stop and members should close ranks and work with the National Working Committee ( NWC ) of the Party if we are to win the forth-coming local government elections,” he said.

Mr Metu also pleaded with party supporters not to abandon their candidates as they mistakenly did to Andy Uba during the 2007 elections.

Earlier, Dora Akunyili, Minister of Information and Communications and the convener of the meeting, said the meeting has become necessary as a result of the acrimony that has crept into the party and caused disaffection among the members .

Genuine reconciliation

She explained that the meeting was not meant to castigate anybody, as that will not help genuine reconciliation which is sorely needed to chart a way forward for the party so that they can build a strong structure which will guarantee success in the upcoming local government elections and 2011 general elections .

Present at the meeting were Simon Okeke, former chairman of the Police Service Commission; Arthur Eze, Chinwoke Mbadiniju, a former governor of the state; Stella Odife, Tony Nwoye, Joseph Okonkwo, John Moghalu and several others .

The party also condole the family of the slain AIT reporter, Efenji Efenji. “Our thoughts go out to his family who had the misfortune of witnessing this horrendous act. We urge the law enforcement agencies to get to the root of this matter and fish out these criminals and bring them to justice,” it said in a statement.
