If only these lazy telecoms bastards could roll out their 3G offerings early enough, we'd all have mobile broadband. . . |

Hi, does anybody know of any company in the Warri Asaba axis that has redundant fibre that can be rented out? I am looking to shoot some media files down the link and looking for cheaper alternatives to Satellite. Any help will be appreciated. |

Currently exploring several business opportunities in Lagos and Abuja. Critical to success is broadband internet capability to move large amounts of data from Nigeria to US quickly. Recommendations for the the most reliable business internet services appreciated. Is there such thing as an international T1 line? Jeff |
Re: Broadband Internet Services in Nigeria by holyghost(m): 2:05pm On Dec 23, 2007 |

I am yet to see a real "broadband" service in Lagos. As such, many of those parading themselves as broadband service providers are just milking consumers by providing a connection speed that is even less than ISDN. The least speed a real broadband connection should give you is within 128-256 Kbps. I got one recently for my business needs in Lagos after much research- Starcomms(because it offered the mobility and claimed to provide the high speed)- um! broadband indeed. The McAfee speed test tool gave 40-48 Kbps download speed even when testing from a location with full signal strength (less than 56Kbps Modem speed) and they call it EVDO. The Swift broadband connection in my cousin's office located on the islandĀ was giving 60-65 Kbps download speed. I logged remotely to my home infrastructure to compare these speeds in Lagos with what my ISP offers (Telus) and the speed was within the range of 600-1000 Kbps and this is just a regular internet connection for home users. Hopefully, some day we will get our acts together and begin to work at getting things right without having to cut corners. If things can be done right in Ghana which doesn't have as much resources, then I don't think we have an excuse in Nigeria. |

40 kilobytes per second is equivalent to 320 kilobits per second. |
Re: Broadband Internet Services in Nigeria by oldie(m): 9:38pm On Dec 28, 2007 |
Info: A bit is a single numeric value, either '1' or '0', that encodes a single unit of digital information. A byte is a sequence of 8 bits. Usually, data communication speed is measured in bits/kilobits/megabits per second, while storage space is measured in bytes/kilobytes/megabytes. In data communications, a Kilobit is one thousand bits. It is used to measure the amount of data transferred per second. Kilobits per second is shortened to kb/s, Kbps or kbps (as opposed to KBps, which is Kilobytes per second. Note the capitalization). The lowercase b is commonly used to denote bits, while the uppercase B is used for bytes. 1 kb/s = 1000 bits per second 1 KB/s = 1024 bytes per second |
Re: Broadband Internet Services in Nigeria by aeliezer(m): 7:15pm On Dec 29, 2007 |
40 Kbps(not 40KBps) is not 40 Kilobytes per second but 40 kilobits per second (40,000 bits per second). For further reference read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_rate_units#kilobit_per_second |

So forgive me but has anyone answered the question is there a reliable broadband service that I can use in Port Harcourt? im using starcomms aircard 580 and I cant be handling it the connection is erractic the signal is bad and its so slow. Im trying to use it to work from UK here but its not happening as it decides to disconnect me randomly tho sometimes it will be connected continually for hours or disconnects every 5 minutes. Even if theres nothing I can use here does anyone know if theres a way I can use a UK internet provider to work here? I dont care about cost but I need a reliable service. |
Re: Broadband Internet Services in Nigeria by Bossman(m): 5:52pm On Mar 17, 2008 |
You would think there would be something in place by now. Until reliable broadband service is available to the masses, and kind of internet business or ecommerce will be too much pain to undertake. |
