The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said it is too late for Nigeria to break up, calling for dialogue to resolve various agitations in the country. Fayose said this while reacting to Wednesday’s meeting the governors of the South-East states had with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. He said the meeting had provided a veritable platform, which all Igbo must key into otherwise they would remain guinea pig in Nigeria. The governor, who appealed to the Federal Government to allow political solutions to agitations by Nigerians as against the use of brute force said, he remained “committed to the call for full and total restructuring of Nigeria through dialogue and negotiation because it is too late for Nigeria to disintegrate.” According to a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Thursday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Fayose said he was “particularly glad that South-East governors have come to the realisation that they cannot ignore their own in times like this as agitation is normal and must not be ignored, although the approach should be handled with caution.” Fayose blamed the actions and utterances of President Muhammadu Buhari for the agitations going on in the country. “The father figure of this country is President Buhari and if his language does not represent unity, there will be agitations like we are witnessing now. “A father figure rallies even the bad boys in his house. The utterances and actions of Buhari when he became President were against the unity of this country. “How can a president say that he will only attend to the needs of those who gave him 97 per cent vote and neglect others who didn’t vote for him? “For Nigeria to move forward and in unity; there must be no sectionalism, there must be no oppression and there must be justice and equity.” The governor commended the northern leaders for standing up to ensure that the Arewa youths’ quit notice against the Igbo in the North was resolved and withdrawn without necessarily arresting and detaining anyone. Saying that the same could be achieved by the Igbo leaders, he warned that arresting or re-arresting Kanu “may be counter-productive as it may be perceived as vilification of the entire South-East geopolitical zone, not necessarily Kanu as a person.” http://punchng.com/too-late-for-nigeria-to-disintegrate-says-fayose/ |

As a British person who is born to a Nigerian Igbo father and Ghanaian mother and as somebody who has gained knowledge of Nigeria's history from its formation in 1960 to the present. I will say that Nigeria has every potential to be the America of Africa because Nigeria has an intelligent nation of people and great intellectuals. In resources the country is littered with resources other countries would wish was in their soil and Nigeria has them in excess, also the natural landscape of Nigeria is awesome in all regions. Culturally Nigerians are the most appealing Africans in and outside of the continent. However, as great as the potential of Nigeria is I do not believe Nigeria as a nation can reach its potential due to the main fact that the north is too strong to be overthrown as it has the largest population in the whole of Nigeria and is a Muslim majority. Every attempt for the nation to develop has been hindered by the northern elites due to their selfish interests. They boast of a divine right to rule the country so they never see the need to share power with any other Nigerian and if they do put a non northern Nigerian in power it will be to serve their agenda and not work to the country's progress. The problem in Nigeria lays in its ideological and moral foundation, as it differs from region to region so the agendas of the people will always differ, thus creating a nation that takes one step forward and one step backwards. A country that is not unified in ideology and moral beliefs can never progress, you cannot expect a nation like Nigeria to progress forward when you have a nation of over a hundred million people who are mostly Christian and Muslim and who hold strongly to their religious beliefs. There will always be a clash of ideas on how to progress the nation as the decision to develop the nation will involve ideas that is rooted from a religious and tribal influence. India would have been the Asian version of Nigeria if it did not decide quickly upon independence that the nation needs to split into two so that the Muslims will have the chance to govern their own nation and control their future and the Hindus the same. Although it caused bloodshed it was in the best interest of the people as the Muslims would have kept experiencing marginalization from the Hindu majority and the Muslim would have kept hoping for a day of when they will be treated equally which would never have come. So Pakistan had to be formed so that Muslims can control their own future and destiny without the Hindus having any influence. I believe early on Igbos and Yoruba should have formed a nation separate from the north so that north can control their own land from a Hausa/Fulani muslim perspective and the Igbos and Yoruba from a christian and western perspective. I believe both sides would have been better off today, but its not too late I believe the time has come for the major tribes to split and create their own destiny and future for their people because Nigeria is too much of a great task for a people who have not seen the bigger picture of unity. 2 Likes 1 Share |
