ROGER FEDERER and Rafael Nadal could hardly have made more different
progress to the second round of the US Open 2017.
Nadal, despite a sluggish first few games in which he was broken by Dusan
Lajovic, quickly moved through the gears and sealed a straight-sets win in
under two-and-a-half hours.
Federer meanwhile looked under-cooked with the back injury that afflicted him
in Montreal leaving him cautious around the baseline.
He dropped the first and fourth sets to 19-year-old American Frances Tiafoe
before triumphing in the decider.
The Swiss’ fitness will continue to be the major concern of Federer fans as the
fortnight progresses and he will want to avoid another five-set epic.
