Standard Sized Or Oversized German Shepherds. Which Do You Prefer?. by royalshepherd(m): 1:29pm On Sep 06, 2017 |
I came accross this topic online and decided to throw it here. when we say over sized German shepherds we talk of German shepherds with sizes either weight or heights that exceeds the limits of the true German shepherds as written in the Breed standard, but can we say an oversized German shepherd is not a pure breed German shepherd?. Being a registered breeder of a German shepherd entails you breed your dogs according to what is written in the breed standard. I decided to breed Showline German shepherds for what they are (looks, courage, agility, strength and alertness), I won't because I'm a Breeder seize the opportunity to create or breed my dogs to mates that deviates from the true German shepherd all because I want to produce puppies I can sell for an higher price....while browsing the internet I see dogs with extremely small shouts like that of the mastiffs labeled as German shepherds or dogs that are as large as a Giant Alaskan malamute labeled as German shepherds and even here in Nigeria you see fake German shepherds on the internet and on the streets, some with short tails, extremely small/big paws, Ears growing in different dirrections like radio antennas and some even label mixed breeds as German shepherds here in Nigeria, if German shepherd breeders before us bred mutts and fake dogs the German shepherd wouldn't still be as it is, please let's stay true to our practices and breed for a reason. I particularly wouldn't say I don't breed for the financial gains like most breeders of nowadays say...I love breeding dogs and it's something fun for me but as I don't have the resources to retain and feed all puppies I breed Will you call me a fake Breeder? or because I sell my puppies to fix a large part of it back into my dogs/breeding program or will you call me a fake Breeder because I sometimes don't retain puppies from my litters?. Contributions and answers to the title of this thread would be appreciated. |

I am a promoter and supporter of the standard GSD. The GSD is a working breed which we must maintain as such. Many so-called GSD today in Nigeria are lacking the breed standards which is killing the purity of this breed. Soon, 'GSD' would no longer be of value. It will be like Kobo in an already dying Naira. For this reason, we, as owners & breeders should STOP patronizing those who falsify these breeds by 'mixing' them in the name of creating something. Some will even say it was a mistake. I still find that hard to understand. The more people buy these 'mixtures', the more 'mixtures' we have in public. Take for example, Mr A purchase a female mixed GSD(mixed with something A does not know) from Mr B. Mr C also purchase a male from Mr B. (Maybe the sibling). Mr A, when his female puppy is all matured, will still mate his female mixture with another impure/mixed/fake GSD killing the purity even more. Mr A, will then sell the results of this bastardized arrangement for N25k. Mr C on the other hand will be using his fake/mixed GSD as stud, impregnating other 'pure' females making their purity somewhat useless when she litters. Mr B will still be happily selling. Now tell me, in this short analogy, how do we get rid of the mixed/fakes ? Short Answer: We can't! They are everywhere already! So what do we do? Simple, STOP buying fakes! Get a pure GSD! As a breeder, stop allowing your pure GSD mate a mixed/fake GSD because of money! Don't let your pure male be stud for fake female. This way, in no time, the fakes will drop and our lovely GSD will have its pride and ego again. So OP, Standard it is 1 Like |

The bigger the better... Oversized dogs put the fear of God in intruders and teach them that your abode is not to be messed with. Oversized it is! 2 Likes |

Standard is always better especially when your dog is working as a security dog. You need your dog to be lean and athletic with tons of endurance. An oversize dogs are prone to certain disease like hip dysplasia and other joint related issue. When it comes to protection, size doesn't matter. 2 Likes |

I've seen an ''obesed'' GSD with the Nigerian Army canine squad before. This dog must have been bombarded with steroids.. That's not a standard GSD at all but they don't mind. |

Unfortunately this is Nigeria where size means everything to most people. No one has time to exercise their dogs anymore, to them size is what makes them purebred and the bigger the better forgeting the diseases that'll affect these dogs later on. But finally I have two questions too..... If a dog is above or below breed standard in height does it disqualify a dog from being purebred? If a dog is obese or on steroids will it affect the pups? 1 Like |

Namdeenero: Well, in my opinion, 1. No. A slight difference in height from the standard doesnt make it impure. The height may be as a result of so many factors. I've seen a pedigree 5 months GSD that is smaller than normal. Not so small but kind of shorter. 2. An obese dog(female), should not have any negative effect on puppies. However, one of the puppies may tend to develop the obesity if the obesity is present in the earlier sire or grand mom or dad. An obese male however, is risky. |

Namdeenero:I'd love to start an awareness program for dog owners in my locality educating them on the benefits of keeping their dogs fit and trim. I once visited a client I helped import a puppy and on getting there the dog which was about 2years old was so obese it had thick drool hanging down his mouth(imaging a gsd with thick drool), it was such an awful sight I had to go back home and bring one of my dogs that shares same sire with the clients dog..my main point of doing that was so he'll see the difference and how much he had destroyed that dog all in the name of keeping a well fed dog. A trim dog is not a thin dog but an healthy looking canine that his fit for whatever work it was purchased for. I believe the only way a shepherd can be below the height in the Breed standard is if it has a stunted growth or a mutt, but once it's within the height range stated in the Breed standard then it's fine..even if it's the minimum height stated within..A dog that his above the height range would most definitely not be registrable by most breed standards except about 5 generations of the particular dog are registered and none of the dogs where recorded to be above the height..then can the dog be registered. I'm quite sure steroids on a dog wouldn't affect the puppies but obesity if present in a large number of dogs down a bloodline can turn up anytime. 2 Likes |
