Nigeria is a developing country facing many challenges and Corruption is the most detrimental of them. Corruption is like a cankerworm that eats easily and deeply into the social and moral fabric of any nation or society. Incidentally, corrupt practices sometimes take place in such unscrupulous and insidious manner they may go unnoticed for a very long time. The simple meaning of it is that corruption implies perversion of morality, integrity, character or duty out of mercenary motives, i.e. bribery, without any regard to honour, right and justice. In other words, undue favour for any one for some monetary or other gains is corruption.

Unfortunately, in our country, corruption has become a part of life. It has entered the very roots of the Nigerian society. Corruption, nepotism and dishonesty have tarnished every fabric of our social life. Our ministers are corrupt, our officers are corrupt, our people are corrupt. Every politician, without exception, is corrupt. Even our anti-corruption departments fall an easy prey to the viles of the corrupt persons and they let them go scot free after minor punishment. We have forgotten the real responsibility of being a human just because of the money. We need to understand that money is not everything and it is not a stable thing. We cannot keep it forever to us, it can only give us greediness and corruption. We should give importance to the value based life and not money based life. It is true that we need lot of money to live a common life however it is not true that just for our selfishness and greediness; we should play someone’s life or money in some unfair ways.

Nigeria have every ability, talent and resource to be a developed nation, We just need some corrections here and there. Evils, it is said, percolate in any society from the top. The topmost people in the country must present good conduct and behavior. They should be completely above board in their dealings and should be honest to a fault. Once we are able to curb Corruption, nepotism and bribery in high places, we shall be soon able to root out the evil of corruption from the entire society. Law and order machinery should be allowed to work without political interference. NGOs and media should come forward to create awareness against corruption in society and educate people to combat this evil. Only then we would be able to save our system from being collapsed. May God help us in our pursuit!
