ARE THERE OTHER WAYS OF INFECTION OTHER THAN SEX?

Although sex is the commonest means of infection, close bodily contact, prolonged kissing and even contact with sores are other means of infection.

CAN GAYS HAVE IT TOO?

Yes, it could be contracted through oral and anal sex too.

HOW DO I PREVENT INFECTION?

its best to avoid close bodily contact or if unsure of your partners status, use condoms.

IS IT SAFE TO SHARE BATHROOMS WITH INFECTED PERSONS?

Syphilis cannot be contracted by sharing bathrooms, swimming pools, hot tubs, doorknobs, toilet seats, clothing and eating utensils.

WHAT CAUSES SYPHILIS?

This is caused by a Parasite belonging to spirochaetes Family called Treponema Palladium.It is highly contagious and has a self replicating tendency being a higher form of life than bacteria.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

This depends on the stage of the illness.The illness gradually progresses if not treated

Primary- painless sores on the genitals and the mouth.This appears averagely 3 weeks after exposure to the infection.Usually heals without treatment
Secondary– This manifest typically as rash on the palms and soles within 6 weeks to 6 months of infection.It could also manifest as moist warts in the genital region.Other symptoms includes swollen glands, fever, malaise.This could also resolve without treatment
Tertiary– This may manifest as heart problems, paralysis, blindness, dementia and even death.
CAN IT BE TRANSMITTED TO AN UNBORN CHILD?

The parasite has the capacity to cross the placenta and infect a fetus.This may present with congenital anomalies or even stillbirth.

CAN IT BE TRANSMITTED VIA BREASTFEEDING?

No evidence to support this for now.A nursing mother can breastfeed her child while seeking medical help.
