Amodu Vs Lagerback ' Why Does Africa Lack Faith In Its Coaches? by NSNA: 11:44am On Feb 27, 2010 |
Why does Africa lack faith in its coaches? Talking point By Glenn Moore Glenn Hoddle and Sven Goran Eriksson are in Lagos, being interviewed by the Nigerian FA with a view to coaching the Super Eagles at the World Cup. Lars Lagerback, Bruno Metsu and Ratomir Dujkovic have been seen while Louis Van Gaal, Giovanni Trapattoni, Guus Hiddink, Hassan Shehata and Peter Taylor have rejected the post. These men have two things in common, they are not Nigerian, and, apart from Shehata, an Egyptian Arab, they are white. They will replace Shaibu Amodu, the Nigerian who steered his countrymen to the finals, and to third place in the Africa Cup of Nations. Having been removed in near-identical circumstances before the 2002 finals, Amodu probably saw this coming. Most people did. Sub-Saharan African countries rarely go into World Cups with African managers. Teams from the region have competed in the finals 16 times, on 13 occasions they have done so under European management, often French. Should Amodu be replaced by a European, none of the five sub-Saharan representatives at this year's finals will be led by an African. Why is this? Ian Hawkey's recent book on African football, Feet of the Chameleon, offers several suggestions, among them a quote from Nigerian Celestine Babayaro, once of Chelsea: "For us it's important the boss has a big car." This alludes to the need for the manager to be respected for his achievements in Europe but his compatriot, and former national coach, Stephen Keshi, was blunter, noting a player would "try it on because I am his brother, a black person". However, Frenchman Philippe Troussier, an old Africa hand, believes the issue is about "politics, not colour", arguing an outsider brings neutrality, so his selections are not dissected for perceived regional or tribal bias. Whatever the reason, it is disheartening for a local coach like Amodu. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/why-does-africa-lack-faith-in-its-coaches-1912243.html |

RecentPost: You are the Mumu Think about it for a second, all those foreign coaches mentioned already FAILED in their jobs to qualify for the world cup. and then your country removes your own local home-grown successful coach that qualify for the world cup and semi final of the nations cup. It really does not make any sense anywhere in the world. The article above is from oyinbo peoples website, which shows their opinion, they most be laughing If Nigeria does not get to the quarter finals, the excuse would be he did not get enough time. Inferiority complex at play |

If the NFA really believe that the rich players should not be coached by someone that they are richer than(laughable reality), then they should just not call them to the national team and stick with the local boys, they should go and hire the entire team of Enyimba of Aba |

It is really sad that we dont believe in ourselves. This Lagerback guy failed to qualify sweden for the world cup and we have now hired him. At the last world cup, Ghana failed to qualify from the group stages of the nations cup and they ended up becoming the best African team at the world cup. The Nigerian team at the last Nations cup might have dissapointed, but anytime they play against european teams, they alway rise up to the occassion. The Nigeria team under Amodu have been solid but not entertaining and that is what all the world cup winners since 1990 have in common. What have happened to Amodu in football would most certainly continue to happen in other professions and we will most certainly continue to be backward e.g. Banks been sold to foreign owners, companies making use of simple software applications when they can get ok ones here, doing simple printing jobs abroad etc. The list is endless. I want anybody to tell me based on the present performance the difference btw capello and amodu. Capello qualified the english team 4 the world cup but he has failed to win spain, germany and france( a team nigeria defeated with second string players under amodu), or someone should tell me the difference between amodu and the french coach and the man still has his job. You can alway point to their previous achievement but given the same opportunity they have in europe are we sure that amodu wont perform has they have done. |

Amodu quote "I have achieved so much in terms of coaching that I think the only problem I have is that I'm not a white skin. Otherwise I can claim to be one of Africa's best in coaching." http://www.football365.co.za/story/0,22162,14287_5970377,00.html |

This Coach saga is a disgrace to Nigeria. I can imagine match commentators with their voice over during a Nigeria match saying something like - There is Lagerbäck on the bench the head coach of the Nigeria National team, he resigned from Sweden after failing to qualify for the world cup - and there is his assistant Amodu the man that got Nigeria to the world cup with an increased world ranking of 15th position |

Nigeria is a joke in many ways The new coach cost $ 1.6 millions equivalent to 100s of million # And all other sports are lacking. When it comes to Olympic there is nothing for Nigerians to be proud about even the current winter Olympic in Canada has a Ghanaian athlete Shame |

Who told u dat Nigeria is contesting with Ghana? this is the kind of response i knew i would get from a typical over hyped Nigerian that is how Ghana has kept trashing Nigeria in football and other sports. I am Nigerian by the way, Nigeria has more money to develop sports than Ghana, more people, more everything, even more people to protest bad decisions by the bad leaders |

Cos Amodu has not proved his mettle, sia1 lost in Egypt, Keshi was sacked by Mali. Lagerback is a 3rd place winner at the WC 94. And the fact that SHehata was considered for the job tells you that the drumming point is the perormance, not necessarily color or race |

It is not a sin if Black Coaches take african team to the World Cup. Very welcomed if it is based on merit. However, we can not because we want african coaches in the world cup, put Desmond Elliot on the coaching bench. If sheyata had qualified Egypt, I would have supported Him at WC. because he had prooved his technical ability. Not a coach who uses try and error tactics in all his choice. No wonder Osaze said, "He had not learnt anytin new under him" (Shu. Am.) Meaning, Osaze knows even more than what Shu. Am. tells them to do. Meaning, osaze could have given better Technical tactics than what the kalokalo coach is doing. I want black african coaches to go to the world cup, but not the dummies we had in place. |

It is not about the colour it is about the quality of the coach. finish! |

I guess the question now will be why did they wait for this long to realise he is not good enough how long did he coach Nigeria for before they realise he is not good enough. |
Re: Amodu Vs Lagerback ' Why Does Africa Lack Faith In Its Coaches? by NSNA: 2:27pm On Mar 01, 2010 |
is Lagerback a magician, are the players good enough If Amodu is not good he should just be removed outright instead of dealing with the local players. Wake up people and smell the coffee |

Think about it for a second, all those foreign coaches mentioned already FAILED in their You call Amodu successful is head scratching, someone once said African believe in "enough is good enough" you coul bleat about how the Swede failed to qualify in a group that had Denmark, Hungary and Portugal but Nigeria got to the WC via the back door with the help from Mozambique, at the tournament (ACON) Amodu showed that he is tactically inept the same reason why he was sacked in 2002, Lagerback was one of the least paid coaches in europe so I dont believe Nigeria would pay him 1.5m because Sweden couldnt afford to pay Sven thats why they didnt go for him, |

coaches stand on the coaches lines beside the pitch and give signs and communicate with their players and all these qualities amodu lack. on the other hand, what the nff has done is using amodu to replace amodu. at this point, if they have genuiety of purpose, there are a lot of tested and trusted coaches who can turn things arround for our football. |
Re: Amodu Vs Lagerback ' Why Does Africa Lack Faith In Its Coaches? by EmmyBoy2(m): 7:19pm On Mar 01, 2010 |
I dont think we should reduce this to Local vs. Foreign Coaches. Ideally, if the NFF had balls, they should have appointed Siasia/Oliseh or any other capable local hand to tinker with the squad.Mind you, the current crop of players I bet you, would always let us down.Time has come to weed out the dead woods there and assemble a much more youthful and very moblie team.Thats what we need.As for Lagerback, I wouldnt criticize him until after the world cup.My attitude is "wait and see" for now.Afterall when Westerhoff came to Nigeria, who was he? what was his pedigree? But he achieved so much, |

It is an Africa we reward failure with success, the man that failed to qualify his own team for WC now came Nigeria and grabbed a juicy contract, the worst part , the man who laboured for you to get the ticket will not go to WC with team. When shall we begin to honour our own? I think the people who always go for these coaches always think of what they will make out of the show. The sitting to interview the coaches will put some estacodes in their pockets. |
Re: Amodu Vs Lagerback ' Why Does Africa Lack Faith In Its Coaches? by omar22(m): 4:46pm On Mar 02, 2010 |
man who laboured for you to get the ticket will not go to WC with team. Bro if your dreaming, you better wake up? If they gave the national job to Siasia I won’t complain but Amodu!!! PLEASE!!!! Only in Nigeria you would hire someone who has failed twice to come back for a third stint…. Ok he qualified but he has demonstrated twice in within Africa that he can’t cut the mustard! He struggle in a group that has Egypt, Benin and Mozambique, so tell me how he would perform in a group that has Argentina, Greece and S Korea? Am sorry Amodu showed no sign of someone who knows what he was doing, I saw one of his interviews or press conference! Ka!!! He looked like a rabbit caught in front of a headlight when the foreign press started throwing questions at him…. Look at Lagerwhateverhisnameis first asked about those who went to the Olympics, Left alone to Amodu we would see the Yakubu’s, Kanu, and Co again… No sane manager in world football would invite Kanu for any tournament but hey “money talks” Kanu walks into the squad like Don Jazzy, You see managers going for refresher course, acquiring more knowledge, tactical awareness etc. Mourinho was an interpreter but he acquired knowledge he learnt from scratch, taking down formation now he earns around £6m a year in wages and more on endorsements… Africans learn the basic and they think they have arrived… no wonder an average European could come to Africa and command a big fee…. Sorry but that’s life… Those who know more than you, would easily earn more than you, they could easily bully you as well. At Arsenals training complex you see foreign coaches looking and learning…. Steve McClaren who failed with England said he had to go back to basic… watch Arsene Wenger method of training, Jose Mourinho at Inter, Van Gaal at AZ before he got the job in Holland… the same with Avram Grant he travelled around Euro looking at coaches, similar to Slaven Bilic very young manager who knocked out England for Euro 2008…but Africans naaa football is not about tactic alone but man management, making a player feel like he is the best in the world is a skill to be learnt… |
