Dede Andre, how far are your Isinweke people from Ngwa?
It is only one community in Etiti that is from Ngwa. They migrated to their present location from Ngwa about 1750. They are called Umungwa, politically, they are in Obowu Local govt area, Etiti.
The guy who organised the Ikenga awards that took place in Owerri last year is from this community.

Iri Ji festival 2010 in London has come and gone, I will not hastily forget the role Ika sons played in making it a huge success. Special greetings to members of Ika Progressive Union, London.
Special greetings to the entire Delta Igbo.
Also special greetings to Ndigbo in general.

How can you say we should write in Ika, when some of us from Agbor cannot write in the language because we are not based there. If you want this thread to be successful, you MUST move forward and allow the common language, English. People can also write Ika, but you cannot ban English!

Re: The Official Ika Thread.(agbor,umunede,owa.etc) Alua Ni by Sagewood: 6:43am On Apr 22, 2011
Your best bet is to learn the Ika (Agbor) language from your parents, friends, and people who speak the language. Looking for classes to learn the language is far- fetched, as it will not be available anywhere except in Agbor.

It is pointless searching aimlessly for an item that is not in the market. What is the point in any one asking you where he or she can learn Umungasi language?.
Or anyone coming to ask me where he can learn Isinweke language?.
Re: The Official Ika Thread.(agbor,umunede,owa.etc) Alua Ni by ChinenyeN(m): 5:04pm On Apr 22, 2011
Well, I don't know, but isn't Agbor a clan? If it is, then I'm not sure the Umungasi and Isinweke (correct me if I'm wrong on this one) examples would be appropriate. Instead, if you had said something like, Onitsha, or Ngwa, or Aro, etc., then maybe you could have had something. But still, I don't understand what the problem would be in understanding someone's reasoning for asking about an Agbor language class. After all, we have okwu Ngwa classes at some of our various Ngwa socio-cultural organizations. Although, this is all under the premise that Agbor is indeed a clan, but if it turns out that Agbor isn't a clan, then much of what I said here doesn't apply.

I'd have to agree with sagewood. And if his suggestion isn't possible for you then I would suggest you take andres advice and take general igbo classes. That way when time comes you can at least interact verbally with u parents or others from your town and differenciate which words belong to ur town and which doesn't. You can simply replace them and the transition is so much better. Learning general igbo can just be used as a foundation to get things started.

I kind of always thought it made more sense to learn your own people's tongue before the general Igbo, because I hear it can be difficult going from general Igbo to a peculiar tongue, as opposed to the other way around where one's lect simply needs to be 'watered down' (some more than others) before you get that general Igbo taste. Then again, I may be wrong, seeing as to how I find it difficult to go from my own to the general Igbo. meh.

The girl wanting to learn Agbor language which does not exist resides in London. In London, Igbo language is available and some Agbor sons and daughters are currently enrolled in this classes. The choice is now hers.

Not difficult. Especially if after she learns it, when around her parents or clansmen she can start transitioning. The reason why it may be difficult for you is because you don't care too much to lose it and/or you are regularly speaking it with your parents or clansmen.

I think it is easier to learn your Igbo dialect first and transition to central Igbo than vice versa.  Every Igbo dialect from Ika, Enuani, Ukwuani, Ikwerre has central Igbo coded into it. You just need adjustments. However, if you learn central Igbo first, you may get lost in your dialect. I know that outside Onitsha and Ogbaru (Anambra) and perhaps Oguta (Imo) and Ndoni (Rivers), other Igbo do not understand Delta Igbo dialects very well unless they are modified or adjusted for general understanding! Even when you modify the Delta Igbo, other Igbo sometimes laugh at you.

I remember two years ago, I was at Ihiala and a shop keeper said to me "Igbo gi e yere eye" meaning that my Igbo was not well done because I spoke a modified enuani dialect. Pat Utomi had the same problem at Ohaneze one time when some uninformed Igbo said that he was not speaking Igbo because he spoke Enuani. I have heard Delta Igbo called "koi-koi Igbo" by some other Igbo too even in this forum.

I am proud of my Igbo heritage but I resent it sometimes when my dialect is disparaged by my brothers accross the Niger. Although, Anioma people are equally guilty of the demeaning references but I believe, it is more prevalent amongst the SE Igbo.

Yeah, that's always been my understanding. Central/general Igbo is a creation, created in such a way that it is completely stripped of any and all peculiarities and complexities that are otherwise present in other versions. So, it makes more sense (to me) to know the peculiarities of one's lect before you descend down to the general/central Igbo, because of the relative ease, as opposed to the other way around.
