There have being a drastic change in health trends over the past few decades. These changes have occurred somewhat slowly that it can pass by us unnoticed. The determinants of illnesses have been known to be both external and internal, and for many years illness favoured external causes more, people felt that we hardly had any influence over health and disease. For example, little was known about the aetiology of diabetes, hypertension, Tuberculosis, malaria, and with these poor knowledge of ailments was a geometric rise in mortality.

Today, mortality from congestive heart failure have reduced by over a hundred percent. People are likely to live to ripe old age with a failed heart. What this means for us is simple, seeking knowledge about the determinants and aetiology of illnesses reduces our chance of bowing to them drastically, the experts would say "diagnosis is half the cure". The life expectancy of an HIV infected adult in developed countries have improved to 85years, from 40 it used to be about 25 years back, a whooping 45years increase. However, in developing countries the survival margin have remained rather stagnant. It is thus obvious where the disconnect it. It lies in our perception of illnesses, the flawed mental reality about good health and wellness.

The New Currency For Sound health is knowledge. Knowledge that the intrinsic factors are playing a much larger role in illnesses that external factors. The awareness that we are responsible for our longetivity than anyone else. A nairalander declares his HIV positive status and he gets over a thousand comments, most of them tilting him more into his already depressive state. Had he known in sincerity that HIV is not a death sentence, had he known that the owner of Orange Institute in Nigeria is HIV positive, yet despite his HIV status he has affected thousands of life's and employed hundreds of people, had he known that Randy Gage a foremost finance expert is HIV positive and remain one of the healthiest finance expert there is, maybe he won't be in pains. Had he known that his business is to maintain a healthy CD4 count and viral load and that It could be achieved by starting antiretrovirals early and sticking to them, maybe things would be different. If women knew that cervical cancer, the most common cancer bedevilling them after breast cancer can be prevented by 3 largely painless intramuscular vaccines, maybe the incidence will reduce significantly in the coming decade, and maybe a 5 yearly simple rectal exam after 40 would save men from the agony of metastatic prostate cancer.

If there is a starting point for anyone it would be the simple Knowledge that the responsibility of sound health have shifted from the doctors table to ours, and if you are looking for where to start from this is what I suggest you do:

1. Avoid smoking by all means necessary, drink rather sparingly, a bottle of beer in a days sitting is ok if u must.

2. Reduce your weight by all means, through eating healthy organic food only and avoiding junks totally. Snack with fruits, , apples, cucumber, peanuts if you feel the urge to indulge, stay hydrated always and enjoy natural fruit juices.

3. Reduce the salt in your diet drastically, avoid refined sugars, soft drinks and sweetened beverages.

4. Seek your doctors counsel in health matters, and Seek your Pastors counsel in spiritual matters. Don't try mixing them.

5. Study about major ailments and take vaccines where available.

6. Exercise as much as you can, a brisk walk 30mins a day, three times a week would do.

7. Engage in healthy sexual habits, abstain, be faithfull to your partner and If you can't use a condom properly and consistently.

8. Have a healthy spiritual life and avoid fanaticism.

In a constantly evolving world, things change minimally in days and drastically over time. Above are the New Currency For a sound health.
