Ya bro,self study is possible.just how U define urself is wat matters,are U disciplined?are U motivated?wat's ur motivation?these are some of the factors that'll help U go a long way in ICT.
U'll need to get e-books and text books(if possible) and give urself time,ur mind must be fertile and always be ready to ask questions.Pple on here 'll help U and also Google can.
To be Certificied,U can write at any of the recognised Institutes.

Institutes like NIIT,APTECH,KAROX etc are ICT vendors

i wanna study sql and java on a short term basis.... hw do i go about it? and does Aptech teach d thier courses well?

I would recommend NIIT. I completed my DNIIT course & some other programs also from NIIT in 2009. Currently i am working as an Internet Marketing Specialist at IT Hands, Inc. Since last 5 years i am in IT Industry just because of NIIT. my friends are also settled in good organizations who completed their GNIIT/BSIM course from NIIT. Even I have list of my known people who were from NIIT & now they are working on different technologies at senior post. From career point of view I would definitely recommend NIIT is the Best, depends from where you are completing your course & how's the faculty staff at there location. Curriculum Standard wise NIIT is very good in comparison of others, NIIT Believes in practical more than theoretical classes for their students.

I can't beleive people are still taking certificates from these schools. The best certificate you can get is the one from the company that created the product that you're using eg Oracle, Cisco etc.

CCNA is a certification course from CISQO whereas the one APTECH is offering you is just a certificate that you did a networking course in APTECH. You still have to do CCNA even after APTECH.

Yes, that's right. The Vendor you registered with is Aptech and not Cisco itself, so your certificate will carry Aptech on it. Since you were taught Cisco Certified Curriculum, all you need do is register for the Cisco International exams so you can get the Cisco certification. The emergence of Aptech, New Horizons and their likes was to only fill a void the Certifiers couldn't fill in Nigeria. What these institutions do is to train and prepare you for the practical and theoretical knowledge. So don't be dismayed. It's just like Secondary Schools teaching WASSCE curriculum so you can take the exams when the time is right and get the WASSCE certificate. I hope my epistle helped bro

I school at APTECH (or it would be appropritate to add 'used to') at APTECH. Baabs, if you are looking to get real skills, don't go to APTECH or NIIT. I've not been to NIIT but I know they cant be different from APTECH.
When I joined, I was also studying on my own. I joined because like you i wanted to have a certificate but I have realised that its not worth it at all. A lot of their teachers do not know their beans. A faculty was once telling us that annotations are a type of class (when you study more of java you would understand). I've also heard things like once you see a word followed by an open brace, then code, then closed brace, what you have is a class. That is completely wrong. A basic example is static intialisation blocks which have the word 'static' and then code enclosed in braces. Even better are instance initialisation blocks which are just codes enclosed in braces, no keyword. In simple English, a class can only be defined by using the keyword class before the class name, then you can add access keywords and then keywords that extend the class or implement an interface etc.

I learnt all there examples I am giving you on my own thats why i was able to know that my APTECH faculties were just teaching us crap. If you have the money, first get a laptop (i'll recommend more than 80GB, minimum of 2GB RAM and processor 1.67GHz x 2). There are a lot of free books that you can read to build yourself up (i can give you links if you want). When you have learnt and have tested yourself, pay for certification exams.

However, like you said, if you need to find a job, a certificate would help. Me, I read Economics in school (2.2). I was tricked into doing that course but the love is still there so I'm registering for UNILAG's PGD in Computer science. My PGD in computer science plus certifications in Java, A+ will definetely get me a job faster than the APTECH ADSE I was chasing because I have found out that the ADSE is not even really recognised. Its only if you follow it up and get the BSC that it will be of any use to you.

Please, go on self study. I'm still a learner so we can always rub minds, start and share projects, exchange books and stuff. Think about it

I want my nephew to learn "computer engineering". He's a fresh post-Jamp and one is tired of waiting for ASUU. I want him to learn CE so he can be making a living from that and possibly later do IT networking and security later. What route would you recommend?
