Kidney Disease! by Nobody: 11:46pm On Mar 03, 2010
Just last week the doctor confirm she has been surviving from kidney disease at Ondo State Specialist Hospital
Before then, she had been having a constant stomach pains, accompany with heavy tiredness
The doctor said, the best advice was a quick kidney transplant(within this month of march)
House, am so scared, financially the family isn't capable of running the cost of the operation(transplating)
I want advice on what to do, besides, if anyone know if there is any foundation, private or government own foundation that can assist on the matter, let me get the reply
I appreciate you all

Hi
The syptoms you said 'she' was having ie stomach pains, tiredness are not typical of kidney disease. In fact, these symptoms are quite vague and can be brought on by not a few other ailments.
I would suggest you try and get a second opinion, maybe even a third. Kidney disease isnt something you treat like a headache. Its management can be quite a financial challenge.

i was expecting to see symptoms like abnormally huge stomach, blood in urine, difficulty in passing out urine or not even able to urinate etc
the doctor should have been more specific. . . exactly what kind of kidney disease are we talking about here, is it nephritis, renal failure or polycystic kidney disease?
did she carry out a blood urea nitrogen (BUN) or creatinine test before she was diagnosed?
if she didn't, then she needs to get tested
i agree with mclovin, she needs to get a second opinion.

Again OP
Im sure youve heard this before but are you aware there is now a thriving black market for organs in Nigeria ? Its been around for at least the last couple years.
So dnt just take one Drs word for it, get another opinion. Who knows, he might just be after A HEALTHY KIDNEY. YOUR kidney !
Ive never heard such a thing as/a 'quick transplant' as stated above. Organ Transplantation involves careful preparation ; screening for other diseases, tissue typing etc.
Dnt be caught napping, get a 2nd opinion before embarking on a replacement.

Its a government own hospital, Ondo State Specialist Hospital, do you think the doctors there can be deceptive?
I will update you sooner

It is not possible to diagnose a failing kidney from the above symptoms. This can only be done by undergoing a variety tests - Blood Tests, Urine Tests - to measure Kidney Function (BUN, CR, GFR, EGFR), various Imaging Tests (Ultrasound, CAT, MRI, IVP), and lastly a Kidney Biopsy. You will have to undergo at least one of these tests, and have the result confirmed by another.

Has the doctor carried out any of these tests? Which one/s, What was tested for? What were the results? What exactly was diagnosed? Was it Chronic Kidney Disease, or Acute Kidney Failure? Any diagnosis should have the ans to all these questions. Acute Kidney failure can occur rapidly within a week, but does not need a transplant, as the kidney can recover fully with the appropriate treatment.

Please supply more info and proceed with extreme caution. I do smell a rat, or simply gross incompetence. A kidney transplant is not something that is easily embarked on in the space of 4weeks. There is the issue of ongoing dialysis, finding a donor, screening for a match, finding the match, anti-rejection drugs, etc.

Dominique's right,
Kidney dx have multiple causes, various histological (cellular) morphology, different prognosis, treatment and outcome.
However, there are certain general physical presentations that can lead a physician to suspect someone has a renal ailment.
The symptoms could be that of acute or an on-going chronic renal pathology which eventually progresses to end stage renal failure (ESRF) whe this happens the next thing you want to do is a renal replacement.
I will try to list all possible symptoms/clinical presentations together to save space and time.

- General weakness and malaise +/-weight   loss, breathlessness.

- Peri-orbital and facial oedema (eye swelling) upon awaking in the morning.

- Swelling of the legs and feet (pitting oedema).

- Pain in the waist , bloated abdomen

- Anaemia, (decreased renal erythrpoietin) usually presents as paleness in lips conjuctiva, palms , nail beds.

- Pain on passing urine, decrease in urine         output, blood in urine.

-Passing of Foam in the urine (proteinuria).

- High blood pressure (chronic sign)

- Drowsiness, pain and bad breath from Uremia (chronic sign).

- Seizures and arrythmias from electrolyte imbalance

-Bleeding into the skin, (petechiae, pupura)

- Anaphylactic shock (acute)

- Increased subsceptibility to infections from the uremia

- Heart problems like congestive cardiac failure, Uremic pericarditis (Yaradua).

In the Clinical chemistry you may find

-raised BUN, raised Creatinine levels

- hyponatraemia, hypocalcaemia, hyperkalaemia,hypermagnesaemia

Im sure the list can continue maybe someone else would like to add to this.
