Low sperm count is also known as oligozoospermia, it’s a situation where a man has fewer than 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen.

Low sperm count and problems associated with sperm quality, are quite common. They’re one of the factors among one in three couples who are struggling with infertility problem.

Having a low sperm count can make it more difficult to conceive naturally, although successful pregnancies can still occur.

Causes of a low sperm count

In many cases, it’s not obvious what causes a low sperm count.

Low sperm count and sperm quality are associated with the followings:

hormone imbalance, such as hypogonadism (reduced hormone production)
previous surgery to the testicles or hernia repairs
excessive alcohol consumption,
excessive smoking and the use of drugs such as marijuana or cocaine
certain medications, including testosterone replacement therapy, long-term anabolic steroid use, cancer medications (chemotherapy), abuse of some antibiotics
