oko Haram has killed thousands of people in North-eastern Nigeria and displaced millions of others over the years.

The HRW report noted that the deported people were likely to face new violence, displacement and destitution.

The group, which investigates allegations of human rights abuses worldwide, says the report is based on interviews with more than 60 refugees.

It added that soldiers tortured, assaulted and sexually exploited Nigerian asylum seekers and denied them access to the UN refugee agency.

The rights group claimed Cameroon deported, often violently, tens of thousands of the refugees since early 2015.

“The Cameroonian military torture and abuse of Nigerian refugees seems to be driven by an arbitrary decision to punish them for Boko Haram attacks in Cameroon and to discourage Nigerians from seeking asylum,” said HRW Associate Refugee Director, Gerry Simpson.

Boko Haram had posed steady threat to communities in north-east Nigeria and launched offensives in neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Since 2009, tens of thousands of people have died in the hands of Sunni fundamentalists in the region.

According to the UN, an estimated 2.7 million people fled their homes due to Boko Haram.

This is so bad. It goes to show the respect Nigeria commands as the "giant ...sorry ant of Africa". But would you really blame the Cameroonians? They had their inglorious role in the whole thing by making their borders a safe haven and passage for Boko Haram but truth be told, BH is a Nigerian problem.

Present day Nigerian northern elites and even commoners used the Boko Haram menace as a political ace back in the day! They refused to fight it, instead they gave the monster nourishment and watched it grow into an uncontrollable beast gobbling all in its path. But while the elites used it to so stupendously enrich themselves, it was only a tale of woes for the masses and today it's the poor masses who feel the brunt.

A soldier friend told me if these northerners really wanted to get rid of Boko Haram from the very beginning, they would. After all are the perpetrators not members of the community? But they preferred to cut off their noses to spite their faces.
