The stage is set for Nigeria to take on Zambia in a crucial World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Saturday.

It’s almost a group stage final for both sides after four rounds of games that have the Super Eagles leading the log on 10 points, three clear of a resurgent Chipolopolo who surprisingly emerged as dark horses in the acclaimed Group of Death.

Zambia are unsurprisingly bursting with confidence after back-to-back victories over Algeria, and are two wins away from a first ever World Cup finals appearance.

They have their work cut out against the mighty Eagles who know that victory on home turf will secure a sixth World Cup ticket.

Amid the verbal sparring and intense build-up to the tie, we take a look at some match facts and players who could prove the difference on the night.

Nigeria and Zambia have met 17 times before now, with the Eagles leading the series with 7 wins, 5 draws and 5 loses.
The Eagles are unbeaten in their last seven clashes with the Chipolopolo after going down 2-0 in friendly in 1997.
Nigeria haven’t lost at home to Zambia, their best result a 0-0 draw in the 1986 Nations Cup qualifier in Lagos.
The Eagles presently enjoy the longest World Cup qualifier unbeaten streak since losing 1-0 to Angola in 2004, a run that stretches to 34 games.
With the deck stacked this way, the Eagles come into the tie as clear favourites, but Zambia have in their ranks one or two players that can upset the applecart.

It’s a slightly different Zambia side since Nigeria won 2-1 at the start of qualifiers in Ndola, with star players like Rainford Kalaba, Nathan Sinkala and Collins Mbesuma all falling out with coach Wedson Nyirenda, but they since been replaced by a number of promising talents.

Brian Mwila: The Platinum Stars forward came big for the Chipolopolo in their home clash against Algeria with two well-taken goals. His aerial ability and relentless style will be of concern to the Eagles.

Patson Daka: The new hope of Zambian football, Daka made his announcement on the big stage by grabbing the winner over Algeria in Constantine. After dazzling at this year’s U20 World Cup, the skilful 18-year-old will become a cult hero with a similar performance against Nigeria.

For Nigeria, the usual suspects are in camp and are already salivating at the prospect of another World Cup appearance. Three players however, can really make the difference come matchday.

Odion Ighalo: Back among the goals after a one-year international hiatus, Ighalo signalled his intent with two massive displays against Cameroon and he’s already warned that Zambia can’t ruin his World Cup dream.

Victor Moses: Nigeria’s most talented player showed his worth to the side in the annihilation of the Lions. A repeat performance and the Eagles will cross the finish line without hassle.

Mikel Obi: The skipper was at his orchestrating best last time out. His vision and poise may prove a different class for the Zambians.
