51-year-old ‘Iron Bassey’ was an athlete who represented Nigeria in Weightlifting at the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles. He however had an injury and couldn’t continue in sports. Sadly, the government allegedly abandoned him to his fate and he recently relocated to Lagos to provide for his family. I weep for this nation though he did the right thing for not waiting for the government to feed him. Who ever composed the national anthem will be weeping by now especially that part "TO SERVE OUR FATHER LAND". Please something need to be done. 1 Like |

That is Nigeria govt for u.They hadly take care of the ones who are still actively representing them in sports let alone the ones who can no longer represent them anymore. |

ifyan:To him Bassey. He should hv developed himself. In as much as we always have a failed government in Nigeria, you don't except government to take care of everyone that has represented Nigeria in competitions. Many others developed themselves and made good use of the fame at that time. Maybe he should hv join any military or law enforcement agencies of his choice then by now it would hv been better than this. Or he would hv gone to school. |
