NEWSOsinbajo reveals why Buhari’s govt has not secured many convictions Published on October 6, 2017 By Wale Odunsi

Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s Vice President, has said that the Buhari-led government, was yet to secure many convictions because it was getting less support and encouragement in the fight against corruption in the country.

He also lamented that prosecution of cases was sfacing delays due to institutional constraints.

Osinbajo said these on Thursday in a chat with members of the civil society organisations under the aegis of the Civil Society Situation Room.

His words: “I don’t think that the people, especially the civil society have shown enough outrage that one expects in order to consistently beam searchlight on the perpetrators.

“People come and ask where are the convictions but I say where are the campaigns, we should be able to point out these persons so that they will not be able to spend these monies.

“If we are sufficiently outraged about the delays being orchestrated by defence lawyers intentionally to frustrate such corruption cases, everyone will hail the move by the Chief Justice of Nigeria,” he said.

Speaking on the economic challenges, Osinbajo who blamed the past administration, recalled that the situation was so bad that two thirds of the states were owing workers salaries, when APC assumed power.

“This is how bad the situation was, hence the decision to offer states bailout to see if they can offset the salty arrears. You can’t point to a single major infrastructural project at a time that oil was selling at $100per a barrel,” he said.

The govt in power today have lost so many cases because they focus more on media trial and propaganda ,they have become too lazy to make a valid point and procure the services of lawyers who can successfully win high profile cases .

Naaaah, dey are loosing d fight cos of ur likes dat always criticize d govt rather than assisting dem to pull down those looters. Nigerians spend most of their time hitting hard on govt institutions fighting corruption, shouting due process as if those looters thought about due process b4 looting our money. Next dey will shout media trial, propaganda, one-side, we have used religion/ethnicity to discourage those trying hard to fight those corrupt elements. We all know dat our sufferings is as a result of d massive stealing dat has been going for years yet we don't support d fight.

I dont think where we are today (the success recorded) in our fight against corruption is too bad. I think we are too impatient and everything thing about us must be the usual 'fire brigade' approach.
What I mean is not tolorating corruption, but in realizing that steadily and purposefully, we can overcome or reduce corruption to the bearest minimum in this country but that can not be achieved in a day.

If we'll be honest with ourselves, we'll agree that it took almost all of our years of existence to nurture this monster and killing it won't take - in my opinion - even two successive administrations. Corruption has become almost normal to us and we see that everywhere everyday.

Having said that, like the VP said; “I don’t think that the people, especially the civil society have shown enough outrage that one expects in order to consistently beam searchlight on the perpetrators...where are the campaigns, we should be able to point out these persons so that they will not be able to spend these monies."

Take the recent Kachikwu/Baru saga for instance. People are already taking sides. As a people, if we, irrespective of where we come from, after waiting and nothing comes out of this matter, throng the streets of our major cities demanding for justice, things will definitely change.
