A lot has been said about how the Sound City generation of Nigerian artistes try so hard to attain commercial success that they lose the Nigerian-ness that separates them from the rest of the world.
Well . . . let's just take a moment to dust our vinyl records and rewind our tapes to pay respect to the true legends of Nigerian music.

Every man who knows a thing knows he knows not a damn thing at all. . . so I'll start by saying my knowledge of these greats are limited to what I listened to growing up.
Basically, artistes I learned to love are the ones my folks prefered grin grin

This is an open response thread . . . so y'all just post what songs(preferably with links) you found inspiring or just interesting from that era.
At the end of the day, we might have enough songs to make another mixtape . . . grin grin

Gentleman - Fela Kuti

Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti is probably the most respected artistes from our continent.

Gentleman is one of his most popular songs, showcasing his musical genius on the saxophone with a solo that reminds one of other Jazz greats.
It takes us back to the 70's where Fela's musical genius showed in the way he controlled a band of a fusion of African drums and Western instruments. . . this was Fela showing us why he's internationally respected and still sending a sharp message that inspired of Nigerian pride.
A comic contrast of the African and Western cultures laced with mastery of sounds . . . that's Gentleman.

Africa hot, I like am so, I know what I go wear
But my friend don't know

He put im socks, he put im shoe
He put im pant, he put im singlet
He put im trouser, he put im shirt
He put im tie, he put im coat,
He come cover all with him hat. . .

He go sweat all over, he go faint, right down
He go smell like sh*t, he piss for body you no go know
I no be Gentleman like that
grin grin

Wait for Me - King Sunny Ade & Onyeka Owenu

Erm . . . first, it might be quite interesting to know that these two legends were lovebirds grin grin
This Bollywood-ish tune sees two of them coming together in an attempt to helping to transfer the traditional African values of 'no sex before marriage' and also telling the parents about family planning.
Even if you miss the fact that they're sending African values, you can't help but appreciate the fusion of their voices.
KSA belting a track outside of his stereotypical fifteen minutes band recordings and he still does a great job.

I was watching an interview with the director of Saworo Ide for one of his other movies.
A white interviewer asked him if light-skinned women were preferred in Yoruba culture and he went into some B.S about how it's all about character.
I just kept laughing because this song was playing in the movie grin grin
