Shea nut is obtained from Shea nut tree and it's widely distributed in the Savannah areas of West Africa.

It's a small deciduous tree which bears fruit for between 12-15years and takes 30 years to mature. The shinning dark brown seeds which are removed after decomposition of the pulp or after drying contain 45-60% fat and 9% protein.

Market potential
Shea nut butter production in West Africa has been estimated at 0.5million tonnes/annum, with principal exporters being Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Mali and Ivory Coast.

In Nigeria, because of its limitation of usage in traditional cooking, cosmetic and pharmaceutics, it's industrial potential have not been fully tapped. However it's demand in industrialized nations is put at over 150,000 tonnes per annum. Shea butter is in higher demand by soap manufacturing industries in major industrialized countries of the world like Belgium, United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden, Germany, France, USA, Canada and Japan.
Shear butter is therefore, a potential foreign exchange earner.

Raw materials
Shea nut is available in commercial quantities and is cheap because local suppliers constitue the main source of the produce. It's found mainly in Savannah region of kwara, kogi, nassarawa, Niger, oyo and kaduna.
