Governor Bello’s resort to strong-arm tactics in dealing with the current crisis is unconstitutional. Chapter 4 Fundamental Rights, section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution states: “Every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons, and in particular he may form or belong to any political party, trade union or any other association for the protection of his interests”.

Bello has denied state employees of their rightful pay and he has now sunk deeper by violating their fundamental rights to participate in trade union activities. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in his state have threatened court action against the ban. All right-thinking Nigerians should support them in opposition to this descent into tyranny.
