^^ rubbish. there have been great african players and if samuel eto'o was not good enough he would not have made the final three when he did. eto'o, drogba and even essien are among the finest players in the world at the moment and are good enough to at least make the shortlist.

Season long Drogba has been better than Messi. Messi has had a couple of great games, but Drogba was on fire since day one of the season. If we look through the eye of the last couple of weeks Messi is better. But if we look on how well they have been playing all season Drogba pips Messi.

Essien - when not injured - was by far the best midfielder in the world. He may not be as prolific as Messi, but his role is different. In what he does he is as good if not better than Messi.

You have not been watching Drogba play this season. He had a couple of worse weeks, but in the first half of the season he was number one. And a lot of people thought so. Thing is: Messi is quicker and has better dribbling, but everything else is Drogba: positioning, set pieces, tackling, heading, strength, finishing,  Naturally as far as heading is concerned it's no contest are Messi is just pathetic at heading,

it my opinion, essien at his best is the most complete midfielder in world football and if a defender could win the award then why not a defensive midfielder? to that insolent mannerless person, i never claimed that africans are being discriminated against. i simply pointed out that african players are good enough but are not winning the award for various other reasons. this also goes for several european players like gerrard,iniesta and even giggs in his prime.

In 2005, Eto'o should have come second behind only Ronnie. I don't think Lampard did much enough to come second in that year. Eto'o and Dinho shook the world of football in 2004/2005. He was the second best player in the world at the time, not third.

george weah won it 95 but it will take time before that happens again. Football now is more about technique than anything else and that's what African players' lack. Very few African players have technique; Kanu, Drogba, Eto, i cant think of any more. I dont like Essien. Not my kind of midfielder. He's more of power and less brain.

^ this is a common misconception of Essien i think. He has really good technique. His one fault in my opinion is in the area of goalscoring where he is more of a "scorer of great goals " than a "great goalscorer"

I dare you to find another DM with such a goalscoring record for club and country.
