Chuks84:

To start with albums like tradition appeal to only one tribe, if you are not yoruba, you'll surely get a headache from listening to it. you should note that most grammy winners are selected based on the fact that their songs appeal to a wide range of people and its cuts across cultural, social and language barriers.
I agree

How can you say Tradition is better than Gongo aso? I dont think 9ice is going to finish reaping the rewards of the latter.

@Poster,its going to be hard but it is achievable, there are talents in that country.
Re: Do You Think Any Nigeria Musician Can Win a Grammy? by pharm: 12:51pm On Mar 19, 2010
Who cares! We don't need outsiders to validate the talents of our musicians. Its our music, let us judge it. I'll still rock a KSA or Fela song over some of the talentless individuals that have been awarded Grammys of late.

I wish more people understood Yoruba, because 9ice is pure genius, his proverbs are wow! But I do understand that if yor're not Yoruba your appreciation may not be as great, even some Yoruba people like myself find his lyrics difficult at times.

Chuks84:

I'm suprised that a lot of people like 9ice's tradition, i thought it was total crap, i couldn't even listen to one song on it. it was an extreme let down afta coming out wit Gongo - Aso. To make matters worse, folks are saying he's capable of winning a grammy! Are u guys high To start with albums like tradition appeal to only one tribe, if you are not yoruba, you'll surely get a headache from listening to it. you should note that most grammy winners are selected based on the fact that their songs appeal to a wide range of people and its cuts across cultural, social and language barriers. The only way someone like 9ice would ever win a grammy is if a category is created for Best Yoruba Album, and that, my brothers and sistas will neva happen!

You are a confused mammal.
What is the difference between Gongo Aso and Tradition as far as the language used is concerned.
If your listening ears can pick out the lyrics of Gongo Aso, i see no reason why it couldn't pick Tradition's lyrics.
The same Yoruba language was used.

You are a deranged mammal. Mumu. I brought up the language issue with respect to the grammys. Most of my favoriite songs happen to be yoruba songs and even though i dont understand what is being said, the beats alone keep me occupied. Music aint all about the lyrics. In my opinion, Tradition sounded like wat we would have expected from the likes of pasuma or obesere. It was made strictly for the yorubas, and like the name suggests it was just plain traditional.

I think you are your own worst enemy. . . . You listen to music for the wrong reasons.
Why not just buy his soundtracks(without the voice) and just let his beats occupy your frail mind? grin

Whats the fuss about winning a Grammy?
Does it add or remove anything from the artist
especially this days that the all event is biased & trivalised sef,
Nigerian's that could win it have taken shots and missed, Real Artists like Fela, Femi, KSA
and they didnt even think it mattered,

So i'm all for staying true to music since real musicians aren't in it for the accolades anyways

In a sense I think I agree with you.The Grammy has been seriously watered down to the point where it really doesn't mean anything anymore. It used to be the highlight ofa career. The biggest single accolade a musician can get.
To answer the question,I think the first place to start is to make an assault on the American music market.I'm not so sure any igerian artiste is yet to crack any of the Billboard charts (Singles or albums) at any point in time. The artiste needs more than fleeting appearances in some music festival over there. When the American mainstream is exposed to the music, they will start to take notice.Much like the way American music dominated the Nigerian airwaves,if the deejays over there don't get to play your song, you can't get noticed enough to even get nominated.

thank you.

The way quality has been sacrificed for overseas accolation these days is just too much.

Every artist wants to "conquer the world" by being recognized in some foreign getup. Yet none of this can substitute for actual talent.

it is possible
Re: Do You Think Any Nigeria Musician Can Win a Grammy? by seunspice(m): 4:37pm On Mar 19, 2010
From what i see so far? I would say a capital NO. Those of them that have a bit of International exposure/dual citizenship/foreign producers et al have a better chance.
But for a Nigerian based musician with Nigerian producers with a combo of fruity loops et al, it would be the miracle of the century to me.
Seal's won it, Sade's won it, Sunny Ade and Femi Kuti's been nominated serially (guys from the old school). i think thats the best we can come, except luck shines on artistes such as Asa, NNkeka, Ayo et al.
Don't dream that the dbanjs, Eldees and 9ICEs of this world would win it. It would take the earth to move off its orbit for that to happen with the current standard of music here.

Neo colonialism still at work

I thought NL'ers are better than this.

Why Grammy, Why not an African or Nigerian based award.

Food for thought for everyone.

Sauron,I think what most people are wont to say about the tradition album is this: there is a monotony to the album. That will not take away the fact that it's classic 9ice.i think it has to do with the producers he chose to go with on this album(cheepo and Dr Frabz).I love 2face and 9ice cos like someone said here both artiste are very deep.Unlike unstoppable from 2face with tracks that carry distinct characters, tradition has a monotony that can put you off.I had to listen to it again and again to get used to it;now i mix it with other songs on my MP3 player. That way i REALY feel it.That's not the same with Gongo Aso and of course not the same with Idibia's albums.
Having said that both artiste stand a very  good chance of winning the Grammy. I said a very good chance cos i feel soon the Grammy will have an award for best African act.The music produced here mimics Hiphop but believe me it's not. We(our artiste, producers, record labels) are spewing a new genre of modern music with contemporary beats made in Africa for Africa so it will be cruel to compere what we are doing here to what Akon has adopted or what JayZ is doing. What we are doing stands out and stands tall. You need to go around and see the impact of Nigerian music worldwide.I have heard people ask me: "that's 2face right?" "that's Asa?""that's Nigerian".This especially in Europe.I feel implication from 2face is on the way there.Just my opinion but it has the vibe.
Please do not let us talk about the terry G kind of music here or the Timaya kind of nonsense.Lets focus on music for intelligent minds and that will exclude those who traveled from mushin to Mo'hits. So for me it's:
1.2face(very possible)
2.Nneka(Very possible)
3.9ice (possible)
4.Asa(Second album please but a candidate)
5.Banky W(original may just be our own usher or whomever I'm not so into foreign acts anymore)
6.Darey (will have to be more original in an African kind of way). There are a lot of Luther Vandross wannabe out there. That's why he's not made such an impact as great as he is.
7.P-sq (will have to raise their game). The twins are good they need lines that are deeper.
I beg to add:
8. Dagrin.(Talented yes but let's wait for his next album).
9.MI is very cool, very lyrical, very deep but rap is their game he just may beat them to it.

The irony! This is coming from a man with "canada" in his name. Oh! Let us use your logic for one minute, why not "Nigeria" or "Togo" in your name why Canada? I guess it is a case of ignorance at work. Food for thought.

People like you disgust me. The thread is about Grammy and if there is home-based artist who can win it. Not some crazy crap you are suggesting.
