agaugust: you say we have no single qualified pilot - i just posted a video of a SAAF pilot doing advanced low level maneuvers Gripen pilots average 50 hours per year on the Grip - USAF considers 50 hours to be a combat ready pilot and the french fly only 40 18 000 hours in the air and a new long term contract with SAAB says otherwise |

agaugust: The richest GDP does not equate to an actual wealth of one country. China is still regarded as a poor country and so does Nigeria. They might all have the richest GDP, but they remain poorer of the poorest. Any economist who would at wealth of any country in that direction will be thrown to places. The correct list. https://www.gfmag.com/global-data/economic-data/richest-countries-in-the-world |

Henry120: Your ears have been cursed indeed. What does airlifting of bodies of SAs has to do with the financial status of SANDF? SANDF chartered a huge plane on purpose because it does not have such a plane and neither does Nigeria. Your country did not even have expertise to conduct DNA and had to import SA professionals at the cost of SA government. Shame for a country that always beat up their chest about their best education when they could not do simple DNA testing without the help of most bright SA scientists. |

It takes minimum of five years for a pilot to qualify as gripen fighter pilot. In 2010 when SA received their gripen C we had almost 8 pilots and 2 navigators and has since multiplied slowly to 14 pilots and 4 navigators, but now things have changed. The new kids on the blog will add to that number to make it 26 in 2015/16. Just keep on watching this space. We are going forward surely but slowly. I guote : To solo on the Gripen should typically take new pilots five years, 2 Squadron's operations officer, Lt Col Musa “Midnite” Mbhokota told journalists in October. This includes basic military training (three months), officers forming course (a further three months), the Military Academy (one year) and basic pilot training (one year). The latter includes 180 hours on the Pilatus PC7 MkII. Next follows some 390 hours on the Hawk at 85 CFS before posting to 2 Squadron where conversion to the Gripen takes place, starting with six weeks in the classroom followed by 70 hours on the Squadron Level Mission Trainer (a flight simulator) and a further 70 hours on the aircraft. Both periods include 30 hours of conversion training, 20 hours of air warfare training and 20 hours of surface warfare training. It then takes a further six sorties to solo. http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=11203:saaf-boasts-23-fighter-aircrew&catid=35:Aerospace&Itemid=107 |

patches689:Actually SAAF Gripen Pilots averaged 224 hours per pilot in 2010, but due to budget cuts they only flew 110 hours in 2011, I expect thanks to the defence review and the fact SAAF received an extra R500 million in 2014 they are back flying more than 200 hours again. |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by patches689: 12:39pm On Dec 21, 2014 |
Henry120: 14 pilots because 14 pilots is what we need for our current threat profile. SAAF has ensure that it has the equipment it needs to quickly expand its capabilities if the need arises. All armies in the world keep equipment in reserves. Unlike Nigeria who got caught with its pants down with its miss-matched and short sighted procurement policy |

Henry120: A109 fleet was grounded - pending paperwork. SOP in any airforce in the world. C-130 needs is not defined by landmass. And A400Ms are back in the pipeline Rooivalk needs are not dictated by land mass 18 000 hours out of 22 000 hours budgeted for means we have an excess of fuel 14 Pilots, inline with our defense posture and requirements DAKs have modern avionics and engines - and are being replaced It operates on a tight budget, but it is not lacking of funds No Gripen are in storage This service is one that Nigerians could only dream of having, coompared to your mismatched assortment of obsolete equipment that is either grounded or barely airworthy and that cannot full the needs your military has. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by patches689: 12:44pm On Dec 21, 2014 |
Henry120: First we have 14 pilots Second, we have 14 pilots because what we need is 14 pilots. Time and training have nothing to do with it. Its based on needs and sending funding to more active and needed units |
